AP US History Dilemma

Hi,

My daughter is a 10th grader in high school. Her school has a 2 part AP US History program. She took part 1 and is not sure whether to take part 2 or AP English instead.

We were wondering does getting AP US credit help in college if you are more geared to a science/math related field?

Thanks in advance!

Go for English - she won’t need the extra history credit for what she wants to study, but AP Enligh (I’m assuming this is Comp) will fulfill the introductory writing course most schools require.

thanks for your help. We were also leaning towards taking AP English as well. Will it look bad during admission process when they see that you took AP US History 1 but not 2? She did very well in AP US 1, so my thoughts are that it explains that she did not drop it because it was difficult.
thanks again.

regardless she can still take the exam… i took the exam w/o the class and got a 3

It sounds to me that the way your school breaks up the AP US History course is that it makes sense in the end only if you take both halves – i.e. there’s a cutoff (Civil War, perhaps) for the first semester and then through the 20th century for the second.

If I’m right, the logic that you give for dropping the course after semester 1 doesn’t resonate. Your D’s transcript would read more holistically if she completes the 2 term sequence.

Can’t she just take AP English senior year?

I consider history to be hell of a lot more fun than English, so I would always choose history. But that is just me.

Just to update on the post, we did stay with AP US History. She will take AP English next year. From what I learned both APs are important and if possible one should take both.
