AP US History vs SAT II

do you have to know a lot of obscure information for the AP US?

I remmeber taking the SAT II and while I didn't do as horribly as I had expected given the minimal preparation I put into it, I ran into lots of questions concerning cultural things like Wizard of Oz, Babbitt, Margaret Sancher etc.

Those subjects are given, at most, a sentence in most college-level US textbooks.

Do we still have to know them?

I feel that you need to know the concepts and trends throughout history for the AP, whereas for the SAT you need to know specific facts, like who a particular obscure person is.

So I thought the SATII was so much harder than the AP exam for that reason.

General trends, huh? Easy enough lol.

I might have to retake the SAT II US history for a 800 b/c some schools require 3…
Any tips on dealing with specific facts?

Like I STILL don’t know who designed Central Park. Or the Elevator. Or which of Sinclair Lewis’s books portrayed a particular aspect of culture.

The Crash Course book totally killed the SAT II US History test. All of the facts you listed (Wizard, Sinclair Lewis, Margaret Sanger) are in it. I read the book twice and made an 800.

I hope I dont forget everything. I took the SAT II in Jan (got 800) and havent looked at anything USH related since.

Would AMSCO be a decent prep book for the SAT II? I heard that it’s really good for the AP, but I’m also taking the subject test.

as for the AP exam, i would say that yes, you would need to know the general trends, but it also really helps to know the exact dates of some things, especially when you are trying to recall info to add in for the essays.

I basically memorized (for the most part) every important date that occured from 1492 to the 1960’s, and while it wasn’t strictly necessary for me to memorize all of that, i did find it really beneficial because even if i forgot some of the dates in a particular period, i did know in general what happened and i could make educated guesses.
