@Ahmeda14960 I think that it’s about a 65% to get a 5, but it varies from year to year depending on the difficulty of the test.

HOW TO GET A 5:
Hi everyone! I am a current junior who took APWH in 2015 and scored a 5 (this was my first AP test and I was only one of two people in my class of 30 to score a 5). For those of you freaking out, here’s what I did:
- I used a mixture of review books, including Fast Track to a Five (highly recommend), Barron’s flash cards (okay, but not the best resource), and AP World History Crash Course by REA (considering we’re getting so close to AP week, this book is GREAT because it summarizes everything and hits on the high points very well).
- John Green Crash Course on YouTube!!! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBDA2E52FB1EF80C9
- Learnerator practice questions https://www.learnerator.com/ap-world-history
- I did all of the practice tests I could find.
- I honestly had just been studying really hard all year, and that hard work paid off. If you’re doing well on tests and essays and have been studying consistently in your current APWH class, you’ll be fine.
- If you really want that 5, spend A TON of time studying. Sucks for now, but it will really pay off in the end.
Essay advice:
- If your teacher is just now starting on essays, I feel sorry for you and your classmates because you really should have been doing that all year. Crack open the books and start hard-core self-studying on those essays.
- With ALL of the essays, if you run out of time, at least put a thesis.
- With the DBQ, as you’re reading each source, write out on the side/underline what you’ve gotten out of that document. At the very least, write a thesis and an additional document (make sure to explain this additional document, though).
- PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIME PERIOD FOR CHRIST’S SAKE.
- Stay on prompt!!
Fun tool: If you want to play around with numbers and see how many you need to get wrong to still get a five, here’s a AP score calculator: http://appass.com/calculators/world (there are other tabs for other APs, too).
Good luck, and you can do it! Be glad that you guys are the last class with this AP World before College Board revises the exam and nobody knows what to do anymore!!
Ask me any more questions as needed I loved APWH so I’m happy to help.
@thefloridavegan Thanks for all of the advice. Sadly my teacher hasn’t started the CC and CCOT essays so I’m going to have to really cram those.
Same here @TP2000
I got 57/70 right on my Barron’s practice exam, and I heard barron’s is supposed to be harder than the real thing, so I think I’ll be focusing on those two essays
how accurate is the AP score calculator btw? because I know that they changed it so that wrong answers don’t count against you, does the calculator factor that in?
And also, it told me that with 57/70 MC questions right, I only need a 5/9 on two essays and 3/9 on one essay, which I’m having a hard time believing.
@thefloridavegan Thank you for the tips!
Is anyone planning on using the Ethel Wood study guide? My teacher gave me a copy and I don’t know how it holds up to Barron’s, Princeton Review, or 5 Steps to a 5. I used her book for Human Geo and got a 5, but I know the quality of books from the same author can vary greatly between subjects. Just in case, I plan to take a few past AP exams from Collegetic and r/APStudents. I’d also ask my teacher if he’d grade my essay attempts. Can’t believe that there’s less than 4 weeks left!
@Hamlon I haven’t heard anything about the Ethel Woods book, but I have both Barron’s and PR. Barron’s does contain too much information, and the PR book is much better. There is a PDF of a 2013 copy of the Princeton Review online though.

This is a complete practice test that anyone can take. I took it and got a 56/70 on the multiple choice portion.
@Hamlon I am using Ethel Wood’s book. Our AP World History teacher told us to buy it before the school year began, and it is wonderful. It includes everything important that you need to know worded in a format that makes it easier to read and remember than Barron’s. It’s less wordy. It has extensive information for each time period and also includes review questions after finishing each one to make sure you understand the material. It’s over 500+ pages long and includes a practice exam. I am planning on reading the entire thing.
Of course, this isn’t my only way of preparing for the exam, but it’s a great resource!
Hey, I’m currently reviewing with getafive.com, Princeton Review 2016, and Barron’s flashcards. Are these materials sufficient enough to get a five? I scraped the five range on the PR practice test, is this similar to the real exam?
@Flugel365 I think Princeton review is fine, If I were you I would worry about the essays, like continuity and change over time
I only have the Princeton right now. Is there anything else I should get or is that enough?
@dsi2000 You can use the website called getafive. Supposedly it is very helpful to students on the AP Exam. I have watched a few of the videos, and they seem to contain all of the relevant information.
whats the cutoff for the redesigned test for a 5?
@thetex the resdesigned test will only come in next year
So no one knows yet
@Ahmeda14960 i meant post-2011 test.
it’s now AP week and my teacher just now started to teach us DBQs and essays. I think I’m gonna fail
@ihavenoideawow The Compare and Contrast and the CCOT essays should be easy to learn in a class period or two.
We just learned both of them last week, and they are not as harsh as the DBQ. If you have a prep book, read up on the essay criteria for all of the essays and memorize it.
