Hey guys! I’m in AP world history and was wondering if anyone could give useful tips for studying for the tests. I mean, all the material is in the textbook and it’s too much to memorize. I just want to know if there is any easier ways to memorize a lot of material. If anyone could provide helpful tips it will be greatly appreciated, thanks!
The main focus of AP World is to recognize the “big picture” history. Don’t get caught up in all the little details of everything. Make sure you understand historical trends and large ideas, ex: How the United States becoming a country affected the rest of the world, and similar ideas. I made flashcards of events in different catagories: Very Important, Important, and Not (as) important, obviously studying the very important cards the most.
With the AP test approaching, it would be a good idea to begin a study plan if you want to take the test. If you’re just studying for in-class tests, I would follow these steps:
- re-read from the book- I would only skim the most current chapters, and put more of your focus on the ones you read a while ago.
- Look up study materials online- theres lots of materials that are very useful
- Watch Crash course, or similar short youtube videos to help solidify things. I usually did this the night before the tests, after all the heavy studying was finished.
- if you have time- watch a documentary or two. This is very useful for big events, like The French Rev, WWI+WWII, The Cold War, Communism…etc.
- Your Princeton review! if you don’t have one, get one!
Here’s some good links for materials to use:

Ditto on just focusing on the big picture. AP World is great in that you don’t need to memorize many dates, so there’s less rote memorization than other history classes!
The crash course world history videos are an invaluable resource, in my experience. Before I took the AP sophomore year, I just watched every one of their videos and read and hilighted a review book.
This may help:
Thank you for the tips!! I’m going to use them for the next test! ^^^ @blackkitteycat @SoCcErTrAcK2016 @coolweather
