I got waiting-listed with the University Apartment and the situation is not so bright. Could you guys suggest me a few names of good apartments around campus (in walking distance) so that I can pay them a visit right after I come to TAMU.

There aren’t many apartments within walking distance of the campus. The only decent one I can think of is the Callaway House which is located on the south-west corner of campus. There are also a lot of apartments on the other side of University Dr., but the neighborhood is real shady and I suggest avoiding that area.

You should consider some apartments farther away and taking the bus to campus. The bus stops at apartment complexes every 10-15 minutes during busy times and runs until midnight.

Are you looking for a true apartment complex or what’s considered a private dorm, i.e.; Callaway House? From my searches it appears closer in to campus are usually private dorms and the apartment complexes are located further out.

Callaway House is a private dorm for mainly freshman, but they also own Callaway Villas, located across the street, which is a very nice apartment complex. All units are fully furnished, and you can rent them by the bedroom as an individual–they will even roommate match if needed. Though it is very close to campus, it would be a long, hot walk, but there is a campus bus stop in front of it, that would get you there in a few minutes. Probably one of the closest newer “apartments.”

callaway house is right next to the train tracks, so just a heads up on that! it gets really annoying but it is also very close to campus…so the bad and the good.

I lived at the heights which was sort of within walking distance of campus. It was about a 20 minute walk to the rec, about 35 from west campus library, 45 from the center of main campus. Walking was never plan A, but I did it a few times.
