So I am getting ready to start at a new school and this school offers a crap ton of AP’s, which means that on my school profile colleges will see that there is a lot offered and expect me to take a lot. That being said, all the AP’s are offered only through APEX learning, a site which I have heard rumors about being notoriously frustrating.
Is APEX frowned upon?
Does anyone have any experience with APEX AP’s? Can you reasonably get an A in them? I have had a perfect GPA to date and I am remiss to throw it away over technical website issues or crappy curriculum.
Should I bother taking them? Knowing of course that my top schools will see that I have way less than what is offered even though I have taken a lot of exams with all fives and fours yet my new school has a ridiculous fail rate on these exams.
I’ve taken AP Chemistry online from Apex Learning, and while I didn’t find it insanely difficult it did require a good deal of work. For this particular course it had a lab portion included as well, and so I’d have to perform an experiment, answer questions about it, etc. around once a week. There are usually worksheets due every week that are pretty long, like maybe around 7 pages of questions that take a couple hours to complete (don’t worry, there are usually a lot of blank spaces)
I’m not sure whether it’s frowned upon, but I don’t think it would really hurt your application if you do well in it of course. Getting an A is reasonable, although it is not the type of course where you can expect to get by without doing any work. Honestly, if most of the AP’s at your school are through Apex Learning, I’m not too sure whether you really have much of a choice to not take it.
Good luck!
Honestly I used Apex for AP calc AB and i thought the teaching was horrible. I ended up using Khan Academy which is clear and concise. There were a lot of busywork assignments and the examples in the videos were not great. I haven’t heard whether it is frowned upon but they do go on ur transcripts (at least for my school they do). What Dew said is true in that you might not have any other choice unless there are community colleges close to u. It should be up to you whether you get an A or not. As with a regular class, you have to put work in to get a good grade. Have fun!!!
@Dew123 @dynamitesamurai Can either of you speak to the things I have heard about quizzes having incorrect answers marked as correct ? Errors of that sort which would keep you from doing well?
@mischkad123 I don’t think I’ve really had any problems with quizzes having incorrect answers marked as correct. For apex, you can usually take redos of quizzes if you didn’t do well, and if you think that there is a problem of the quiz you can always contact the teacher managing the course.
Thanks for the info! There really isn’t a whole lot of info floating around on them, except for the positive reviews they post on their site, which is soooo reliable and not bias at all…
Ya srry for the late response, but I haven’t had any problems with APEX when it comes to the quizes. I dont think it will be a big deal for you. In my class u could retake most of the quizes but my instructor was really lax. Good Luck!
