Apparently I'm doomed.

Corporate financial management major here. After switching majors, I just got into my specific college (My university’s college of business administration.) this semester after doing all the prerequisites.

I have a 2.8 GPA, and as of yet no internships and I’m not in any groups.

The assistant dean emailed me and basically told me if I don’t get at least a 3.0, get an internship, and join some group, I won’t find a job in my field.

What do they expect? I have to work and pay for my own tuition. I can’t get straight A’s every semester.

Am I doomed?

Don’t lose hope. When it comes time to write your resume be sure to include your work experience and note on your resume that your pay your own tuition (or a % of it). I would try to work hard academically in an effort to bump your GPA up to a 3.0 if possible as it will likely open more doors for you.

It’s possible to turn it around. I slacked off my sophomore year after transferring and had a 2.8 after a year of coursework (not including my pre-transfer gpa). In my final two years I raised it significantly along with 2 internships, a part time job, and ECs. You should definitely focus on getting a 3.0+ which will help you at least source a few smaller internships. When it comes to ECs, you really just have to put yourself out there and contribute to things you’re interested in. It’s something that isn’t necessarily limited by your GPA and is a definite resume booster so why not pursue them?
