Appeal for Cal?!?!?!

I need comments from you guys.

I got rejected from Berkeley:

Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.76
Technical Courses' GPA :3.7
Transferable units: 114 + 10 (2006 summer)
I have completed 88% of pre-req available at my cc (De Anza) within 1.5 years (I changed major) and i will complete the last 2 classes in summer quarter.

There are not much post talking about transfer in engineering major.
Do you guys think I have a fair chance, should I go for that?
p.s. I am international student.

114 is a lot of units... 124 is insane. are those semester or quarter units? i dont know whether schools reject people for having too many units.... it's something that i would look into.

They're quarter units.

I would, just because you have nothing to lose since appealing is free. But don't count on a reversal. Your international status doesn't help you as int'l and out-of-state students account for only 10% of admits, and this is on purpose. The UC is and always has been intended for Californians per the UC charter. Intls and out-of-staters are admitted more to enhance the learning experience and offer diverse views to the intended constituency of UC, California residents, than to fufill any obligation to educate.

Also, you don't have the prerequisites done which puts your appeal on very shaky ground. You should've read in the application that Summer work is not considered in the application review process. Unless your delay in completing these prereqs was due to some extreme hardship (health problems, death in the family) and you have documentation to support this, you're not likely to prevail. Your application was up against thousands of others that had ~3.7 gpas and DID have the prereqs done by Spring.

On the bright side, if you applied to any other UCs and were accepted, you will still get a world class education if you attend one of them--especially in engineering. Go to UCSB--it's f'ing beautiful there and has hotter women. The engineering progs. are top tier too.

Yeah, he is right...
I didnt have only 1 prerequisite needed to be completed in summer and I had a medical problem, yet they rejected me...
btw, I have a 3.8 from UCSD with 105 quarter units and was applying for Mathematics with tons of EC's and work like 30 hours a week, and I am a California resident now...

but yeah dont give up, try appealing, u hav nothing to lose, everything to gain....

If you have a whole bunch of stuff to tell them and to send them, appealing is a good idea. If you don't really have anything to add to what Cal already knows about you, I can't see your appeal being successful.

What I would do is try to figure out why I didn't get in. Your stats are very competitive, but it may be that you weren't convincing in your enthusiasm to
ME. Show them that you're not just another body in lecture or another GPA the Cal computer has to calculate.

Thanks for all response!!!

I think they reject me because i got a C and W (withdrawal) in two of my math classes (the last course in calculus and differential equation, respectively). I was discrimated by the professor probadly i am an asian. And I had no choices to avoid taking the 2nd class with him since my college offers only 1 class each quarter...sigh...
I don't think i can put this into my appeal letter since it seems like I am blaming others (esp professor)
I prepared my pre-req classes much much faster than my peers (they took like 2.5 - 3 yrs to complete all pre-req). I took like 20 units (in sciecne) per quarter. I tried my best to fulfill their requirement...but it was quite impossible to me...
The reason i mentioned in last few sentences are what i am going to put in my appeal letter.
Do you guys think it's persuasive?
thanks again!!!!

I wouldn't play the "race" card if I were you. But do include that extra stuff since it shows motivation on your part. (They want highly motivated students). Try your best to give new information in the appeal if you have any. Go out of your way to NOT repeat info that was in your original application. They likely saw your courseload and difficult courses in their initial review of your application and don't want a rehash of the same information. If your appeal is too much old stuff, then the garbage can is likely where it will go.

Talk about that particular professor's intransigence and how you adapted to the situation and overcame it (if you can/did), despite the fact that he/she was hard to deal with and the only one teaching Diff-EQ. (or whatever course it was). Talk about how you were disadvantaged because of the size of you community college and how you have made the best of the situation. THen get some really good letters of rec. because you're gonna need them it sounds like.

They want people with their prereqs done because they finish college and graduate faster than those that don't have them done. Make a case about how you are such a motivated student that you will devise a plan (send it with the appeal if you want) to take summer school or something to graduate in the expected two years and not take up space for other students.

In the meantime, don't get tunnel vision for CAL. There are plenty of otehr places you can accomplish your goals. Good luck.
