HELP with BERKELEY APPEAL !!!!

Hi I think I am a competitive cadidate for Berkeley though I was rejected. My Stats: 2140,SAT2 PHYSICS:720,MATH:700 n my extra-curriculars were good[school annual fest organiser, school magazine editor, quiz champ, marchpast, debates, lots ofsocial service] ,so were my high school grades.I dont know what to put in my appeal letter which would make them really give my application a second thought.Advice from current CAL students or anyone with experience in appeals or anyone who thinks they can be of help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. You can also voice your thoughts if you think ever stood a chance in Berkeley.......................

I don't have any specifics to offer cooladu, just wishing you good luck. Maybe going to talk with someone to drive down the fact that you're highly motivated? Good luck.

Hey thanx for the luck I'm really gonna need it.......neways you say that its easier to transfer to berkeley?Well I'll be mostly attending UC San Diego and my major is Mechanical Engineering so I wanted to know if it would be possible to transfer to Cal after my first year. Also will I have to get really outstanding grades to get into Cal ? Also is it easy to change majors within engineering in Berkeley ?

yes, you'll have to pull a pretty high GPA to trasfer to Cal, which isn't obvious at UCSD. It's almost easier to go the JC route.

Within engineering at Cal, there is a pecking order in terms of GPA entrance for each major. In decreasing order, EE/CS, ME, ChemE, CE, Ind. E. I'm not sure what those are today.

yes, you'll have to pull a pretty high GPA to trasfer to Cal, which isn't obvious at UCSD.

I'm sorry but i didn't get u here.......did u mean that people at UCSD dont get high enuf grades ?? Also whats JC ? Ive also got into GeorgiaTech which do you think is a better option between UCSD and GTech ? Ill have to pay out-state tutuion in GTech so is the huge increase in fees worth the difference in quality of education or prestige?

The problem with GT is that it's an engineering school, a bit like MIT or CalTech (but to a lesser degree), so it's not a very well-rounded experience. Not worth the $ IMHO. San Diego over Atlanta too.

I meant that the grading is probably pretty competitve at UCSD, you're going to need a very good GPA from there to transfer to Cal Engineering.

ok thanx n i last q..........sorry 4 the trouble.........wad was JC that u mentioned wud be n easier route 2 CAL ?

mm ok so please don't take this the wrong way, but I would not recommend appealing to Cal. It's competitive as it is, and to get admitted through the appeal process is like finding a needle in a hay stack. To be seriously reconsidered, you must present outstanding new information that you did not present to them in the regular application. Be honest with yourself. If you know that you haven't done a great deal, or something that's really significant, ever since the application then you really should not waste your time. I don't mean to sound negative, but I just want to tell you what I know. Where else did you get in?

JC is junior college

This is true.

California Community Colleges (aka CCC's CC's or JC's) have priority in admissions to UC's. This means they will get in before you (with similar stats), even if you are transferring from UCSD.

What does he have to lose? Let him take a stab at the proverbial needle in the haystack. I think that the appeal helps convey that the applicant is very motivated to go to Cal. Many applicants aren't...

FWIW, I got into Cal through an appeal, and many others did. It's still quite a longshot, but it's worth trying.

bayarea88 I'm either gonna go 2 UCSD or GTech but right now i totally leaning towards UCSD(I'll bre OOS in GTech).Wow,CALX it is great to know someone who got into CAL through the appeal.......could you tell me what significant or new info did u put in your appeal ? Also how do you think the mood of my letter should be......should it be fiercely confident ["i was born to study at berkeley"] or fearfully optimistic or like im puttin my whole trust into you to make the right decision thingie........

I agree with you, I was just saying that he wont have much of a chance (if one at all) without something new to present.

You should just convey your interest into Cal. A lot of our applicants aren't as enthusiastic as you are. Try to establish a personal connection with the admissions dept, that's how I got in, they got to know me. But maybe that was because I applied from abroad and the forign student admissions dept. was smaller.

Longshot, but I igure you've worked really hard the last 4 years, it might be worth trying a little longer.

tone of your letter: neither fiercely confident nor fearfully optimistic. More like tremendously motivated in what Berkeley can bring to you and vice versa.

well i did my high schooling abroad 2 though now i am a permanent resident in the U.S.My high school curriculum was pretty tough much higher than its U.S. counterparts.......how about u? CALX where did u come from?

Hey! i wish you luck but the chance of getting in is around 30 out of 1000. and you need really new stuff. sounds like you would be better off just going to a jc. they have one up at berkeley.
