appeal? help

So, I applied to the Thorton School of Music as a Music Industry Major and was rejected/heartbroken :(
USC is where i want to end up-where i need to end up
so, I was wondering if I should maybe let USC know in my appeal letter that I'd be willing to major in pop music as well, since i'm also a singer/songwriter/music freak ;P
Do I send my recordings? or youtube link? or what?
I did get that weird rejection letter.. about the "special group" of students they want to transfer within the next 2/3 semesters... I can't help but think its just a sympathy reject letter :/

I'm confused.. and scared to have this new strand of hope...

I didn’t get the guaranteed transfer, so that is great that you received it. My neighbor down the street (a legacy) went to the B-School at AZ for 1 year and transferred to USC this past Fall and hasn’t looked back. His sister went to another school and transferred into the B-school as a Junior.

Are you a legacy? They seem to be the only students who received the guaranteed transfer.

I’m appealing for B-School so I really don’t know anything about schools that require extra material, sorry!

well, a semi-legacy i guess…
my uncle graduated from the music school, and is a successful musician… so that might have done it

I just really really really hope i don’t have to transfer… and that my appeal will work… (crossing fingers)

Well, here’s how it works for SCA (which is portfolio based). Once you are rejected from SCA, you can’t appeal that decision but you can appeal for a spot in CLAS or another not portfolio-based school. One of the posters in the SCA thread called admissions and asked. I’d imagine it’s pretty similar for Thornton, unless the major you’re applying to isn’t audition-based.

alliecat, first off, I’m sorry about your rejection. I hope you have lots of other good opportunities. Popular music had a very specific admissions process, requiring a prescreen and, if you pass that, an audition. The requirements are listed on the Thornton part of the USC website. But unfortunately, I highly doubt that you can send a youtube link and be considered in an appeal, especially because the popular music program was extremely competitive this year (my son is studio guitar, but we know current popular music students). I would suggest you call Admissions or Thornton Admissions and ask this question before you go to the trouble of submitting a portfolio in your appeal.

The good news. If admitted to USC, I believe you can audition in Spring of your freshman year for most of the music programs, no prescreen required. Double check that, though.
