Earlier this week I received a letter saying that I am no longer eligible to receive TAP financial aid because I did not meet the requirements the past 2 semesters and I accept full responsibility for my actions. I am writing this letter in hopes that the decision to suspend my financial aid can be reconsidered. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to write my appeal.
Being a first year college student school was 10x harder than I expected it to be. My poor grades were not because I partied all day or because I did not take school work seriously. It was due to the fact that I hung around the wrong group of friends and also because I thought that I could handle everything on my own and did not seek out help from school counselors, advisors and teachers as I should have been doing throughout the semesters. Being a first generation college student I had a lot of pressure from my family that looks up to me and is very proud of me. Attending SUNY Morrisville is the best thing that I could have done in my lifetime and I am not ready to let it go. But due to my parents’ financial status I would not be able to keep going to school without the TAP program causing me to dropout and I would be letting myself and family down. If you would grant me another chance for financial aid I will push myself and take advantage of the school free tutoring sessions for any class I am having difficulty with and email teachers to take advantage of their office hours to ask questions so I can better understand the course work. Also I will make appointments to meet with counselors and advisors to help keep me focus. It would be an honor if I can continue my college degree at Morrisville and I understand fully the predicament I put myself into and will not allow myself for another mishap. I already came up with a plan to help me get back on track such as hanging around the right group of friends who take their school work seriously and going to the library often to finish schoolwork and to study. Please understand my bad grades does not indicate that I am a bad student I just got caught up in the fun college life but now I am ready to settle down and make college my number one priority . I know I am capable of meeting all requirements that I need to get back on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and make myself and family proud. Thank you for your time you took out your day to read my letter
Sincerely,
is this appeal letter good enough
This letter is too long and too vague on what you are doing.
What have you already done? What will you continue? How will you improve your grades…and hanging out with different friends isn’t the only plan you should have.
What is your GPA and % age of course completion?
Could be more specific - what is your GPA, what classes did you do poorly in and why (e.g., skipped class.) Also presumably you were warned about your poor grades at the end of semester 1 - what actions did you take then and why would you be more successful now?
- Why didn’t you change anything after the first semester? Why would you think you would do anything differently?
- Do you understand that for every hour in the classroom you are expected to do 2-3 hours of reading/hw/studying?
- What specific support does your school have?
e.g.
Writing Center
Tutoring
Professor Office hours
Study groups
Study skills
etc - Talk about you will structure your day

In addition to what others have said I strongly recommend that you edit your letter to correct the punctuation and grammar mistakes. Paragraphs are your friend.
