Appeal Proccess

Can someone tell me what the appeal process is for Berkeley? i can't find it online, also what do they require? i know i have to write a paper but can someone give me pointers on how it should be written?

Also, i have a horrible GPA (3.3) but that's because i started college when i was merely 15 and i brought it up from a 2.0 to where it is now, ive heard they care about improvement, is that true?

One more question, how much emphasis is put on extra curricular? i am president of two clubs, and many many other activities on my resume

I know that one of my friends with a 2.5ish high school GPA was able to appeal successfully because he actually published 4 theoretical math papers in high school. He talked to one of the Fields Medalists and had the medalist convince the adcom into admitting him.

He’s the only person I know who appealed so I don’t know how hard the process is.

has the information you need.

Also, just curious, did you already put that information on your application? If so, then it seems like you probably won’t be admitted.

I don’t think they care much about how many extracurricular you participate in, but rather how involved you are with each specific.

thank you for your advice!! ill check that out, i put some of the stuff on, but i just recently got accepted into a fellowship in washington DC for summer that i would like to put on and didnt get a chance to, and given that im a political science major thats pretty relevant

@ Kayla: What matters is “new and compelling evidence”. A DC internship could put you over that edge, but it’s important to remember that appealing is always a bit of a longshot. I successfully appealed to UCLA, but that was because they had missed a prereq I had already completed.

Are you a freshman or transfer btw?

Are you a transfer applicant?

yes i am a transfer applicant, is there anything else i could do at this point? there is nothing i wont do to get into that school, i KNOW i dont have the best grades but thats only my first year…

I felt the same way before getting in. Like I would’ve done ANYTHING to get in here. But now that I’m here, well any other school would’ve sufficed. Once you come here, you really have to be dedicated if you’re going into the sciences or hardcore majors. So if you end up going somewhere else, you might do better there and get further.

Here you go:

I was in a similar position as you and got into Berkeley for EECS through appeals so it is possible. They do care about improvement but you still have to make a strong case for why you have improved.

Limited to my own experience, I don’t think Berkeley considers extra curricular activities as much as other schools like UCLA. I have relatively no extra curricular activities so I ended up writing about my life and why my grades totally sucked back in the day and how I worked to pick them up. I wrote that to both schools and UCLA still outright denied me while Berkeley accepted me. Another person I know has a worse gpa than me but has a ton of extra curricular activities and was denied from Berkeley but accepted at UCLA.

So if you really want to come here, write your heart out and don’t sound to heavy handed. Otherwise, every other school, at least UC will most likely give you a similar experience and will probably be easier. For example, most of the material from our EE and CS courses are used in every other UC, just tests are hella easier from what I’ve seen from other friends.
