I was rejected from Carolina the other day as a RD OOS applicant. I had a very solid application, course transcript, although my GPA (3.9) and SAT score (1750) was fairly low. My two brothers are currently students at UNC and I am very interested in attending. I read that in order to appeal a decision there would need to be legitimate grounds. I was considering registering for an upcoming SAT date, in order to attempt to score higher. If I were to gain a higher SAT score, would the admissions office be open to revaluating my application? Is this something I would have to discussion with the office of admissions? Does anyone know of decisions ever being overturned? Should I just give up and possibly apply as a transfer after next year?

I commend you for your stalwart insistence, but if people were able to appeal their decisions on taking an SAT test after the decision is made, then the admissions office will have too much paperwork to process and that would destroy the integrity of the admissions process because you should have everything you need to prove your academic excellence before turning in the application. Your years of preparation should have enabled you to succeeded in gaining admission to UNC - such as the SAT score. UNC states that legitimate grounds for appeal are things like paperwork, score, information errors and such. Otherwise, SAT scores take quite a while to be released, therefore making any last ditch attempt very difficult to pull off because that would coincide with the admissions making a decision on waitlisted students, making your chances even slimmer. However, as an OOS applicant, you must have higher credentials than In State applicants in order to win admission to UNC. Hope this post helps.

Yes it does. Very informative, thanks for the reply. I was unaware that revaluation was only in the case that there was a specific error in the application process. Valid point there, if my credentials were up to par, I would be on the wait list.

My opinion is that you really need to move on.

Getting in out of state is very very hard.

And with only a 1750 SAT (don’t get me wrong, I myself only got a 1200 back in the days before the writing section), you are not that strong an OOS candidate, and plenty of kids with higher stats than yours also got rejected.

My suggestion is that if you really want to go to UNC, that you try and transfer.

What other schools have you earned admission to???

UNC is not the only good school.

Yeah now that I think about it, I agree. I read through the admissions thread and saw that several students with significantly higher scores were also rejected. I dont really like the idea of transferring, and I would rather be in the same university for all four years of undergrad. Im assuming that once I spend a year at one school, I wouldnt want to leave and start again somewhere else. Some Im pretty much moved on about the idea of attending UNC. Ive also been accepted to U Texas at Austin, U Miami, U Virginia, and Mizzou. Im planning on attending UVa.
