Hey everyone, I am trying to appeal to UCI so I can pursue my goal of becoming an MD. However, during my Sophomore and Junior years of high school I had serious family problems resulting in a 3.5 UC gpa. How can I effectively convey my situation, as just last semester I got a 4.2 gpa so I know I am capable of going to UCI. Also what should the length of my appeal be and what else should I include. All help is greatly appreciated as my future rests in this appeal.

Honestly, I think it would be pointless to appeal. I have talked to many people, and they said it is going to be nearly impossible for them to accept you from your appeal. Unless you have done something extreme since the time you applied, like came up with your own research on multiple sclerosis, or some independent statistical research on something. Other than that, they are going to accept the waitlisted people first, and maybe take a look at the appeals. I suggest looking at the other colleges that has accepted you, that way you will not be stressed the last semester of your senior year, it is not worth it to be denied twice.

I seriously think you should appeal. During my year (last year), about 5 people from my school appealed and made it. This one girl I knew with a 3.2 UC gpa and okay-ish sat scores appealed… And she was told that she got in literally 2 weeks before school started. I was kind of shocked by how many people I knew made it in through appeal, but it happened. Maybe UCI just rejected a lot of students just to boast that their average admittance rate gpa became a 4.0 and then realized that some students were overqualified and chose other schools instead of UCI. So then they just started accepting a lot of appeals… Maybe? Haha that’s my theory.

So just appeal! You got nothing to lose right?! :D

just appeal.

i’m appealing to uci too.

what do we got to lose anyways by applying? a couple hours of thoughtful time?

Thanks for the motivation to write an appeal. However, does anyone know if there are any length requirements for the appeal. Thanks a lot again, because I probably would not have taken the initiative to write an appeal if I thought there was no hope of getting accepted.

Make sure you have new relevant information to present, otherwise it will likely be passed over. On the other hand you have nothing to lose so I would do it regardless if you feel that UCI is right for you. Be sure to visit first since appealing and getting in and then going to another school is a bit of a jerk move imo.

I just called the admissions office and they said there is no limit for appeals letters. And they told me it isn’t impossible to appeal, you just need a good reason. They also are unsure of when they will actually notify students of their decision. I hope this helps!

Since UC adopped waitlist policy, you really think appeal going to work anymore?

well… I think it’s unfair to make assumptions already as to if appeals wil work or not, because even if they don’t, what do you really have to lose by doing so?

if you think about it, it makes sense, UCI is often the backup school for many, and most of those accepted will continue on to other schools, and among those who accept the offer, are potentially waitlisted somewhere else just waiting for a reply and in the end opening up spots. And although there’s a waiting list, not everyone who was offered it will be accepting it, or even going to continue on to attend even of they’re accepted. The idea of a waiting list is only new for the UC system as a whole, UCI has had if for the past few years, I’m not sure, at least last year I do know and yet students still got in with an appeal. reality is that Anything is possible at this poin

ok so we have a family friend who is admitt counselor at irvine and she told us in essence the waitlist is now the unofficial version of the appeals process so basically anybody who thinks they should appeal for reconsideration will 99.99999% will be (re)rejected. theyre virtually going to ignore the appeals which kind of sucks for the not so good academic student with a good background and citizen. hope this helped alot of you guys who trying to appeal your valuable case. sorry about the bad news

WHAT THE…

I know a bunch of people who didn’t even get on the waitlist, appealed, and got in. I think uci is easier to get into by appeal compared to other schools since it is a “backup” school

froobles: exactly how many people do you know that got in on appeals? what did their appeals entale?

I personally know 5 people who got in through appeal… There were maybe more from my school that I’m not aware of. I don’t know if it was just my HS, but it seems like 1/3 of people currently going to UCI from my year got in through appeal

One of my friends wrote something like his grandma was sick and therefore he didn’t get good grades junior year. Another person’s appeal was sending in grades taken at a CC. I guess they forgot to send it in… or just resent it because they were desperate? And another wrote that they got bad grades cuz their dog died. Hahahah! I don’t know about the other 2 though.

bballplyrref: I read what you wrote on the other thread. You have about the same stats as the girl I knew that got in 2 weeks before school started. Your medical hardship seems like a fair reason (A LOT better than the ones my friends wrote), so go for it. Goood luck!
