I entered community college in the fall with 36 semester units of AP credits and applied for admission for Fall 2018. I am currently finishing up my last class for my major in Statistics by taking Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. I am also completing IGETC as well this Spring. As a one year transfer, the only grades the UCs got to see were my fall grades where I only took 12 academic units and 2.5 units of off season track and field (which doesn’t count for GPA). Initially I had straight As, but I ended up bombing my Multi variable final due to catching a fever during the last week which cause my grade to drop from a 96 to an 86. Since this class was 5 units, it dropped my GPA from a 4.0 to a 3.58 which made me below the average range for my major at UCLA and UCB. Fortunately I was able to get into UCSB and UCSD since my GPA was considered ok there and got waitlisted into Berkeley probably because of my essays. I’d like to go to UCLA however, because it’s the closest college to me and I work around that area. In the winter I took 7 more academic units along with preseason track and aced both classes which brought my GPA up to a 3.73. Currently I’m managing 20 academic units along with track season to complete IGETC since Berkeley requires that to be done as well during Spring. I was wondering if this upward trend could allow a better chance for me to get in since they judged my chances of succeeding based on one B out of the three classes they were able to see. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
I know improving grades in winter are not a basis for reversing an admissions decision, but could it work for a one year transfer since there were no other grades to look at?
Because you chose to apply with only those grades then it is not grounds for an appeal. Your best bet is to reapply as a junior transfer so you have your new GPA.
While I agree that it’s certainly your best bet to just apply next year, I don’t see why you shouldn’t just try. Another transfer last year was missing a prereq for a heavily impacted major, and was able to appeal successfully apparently through just talking about how he will focus better next time. You still got into some amazing schools tho and if you’re able to get off the waitlist for Cal I’d just go there.
@10s4life @ericbadmon Thank you guys for replying. Just to update (I personally dislike seeing questions and then no update), I am currently deciding between UCSD and UCSB before the SIR deadline and hoping to get off the waitlist for Cal.
