I'm really new to the way CC works but basically, I've been rejected from New College and I was wondering if anyone in Florida (or knows about Florida schools) could help me out.

I am a former Pine View student and I have a less than sterling GPA. I have an F in Geometry Honors (but a B in regular geometry) and a D in Algebra 2 (which I am making up with grade forgiveness via night school). A C in Biology and a C in English 2 honors. Very crippling, already. Everything else is A's and B's, with the last two years being mostly A's. I hate "explaining" my failures but I had a lot going on the first two years of high school. I was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder (turns out I have ADD) but it doesn't matter. I don't want to fall back on illness as a blanket for my capabilities. I have mostly honors classes and a few regular courses due to scheduling conflicts. (Regular anatomy, regular physics. Lol I wanted honors for both but...it was either regular courses or Dance 1 and 2. I'm pretty sure you can sympathize with me there.)

SAT scores: abysmal. 640 in critical reading, 460 math, 620 writing. I retook the test in December and am waiting for the results.

ACT scores: actually just took the test today. I feel confident in the grammar...but that's to be expected. The math was easy...but there was just no time!

AP Courses: 2-D Design (3), Art History (4), French, English Literature, and Draw are pending completion.

Science/Math: I've taken 5 math classes and will earn 4.5 credits. My current math class is Math Analysis (weighted) which is like an introduction to Pre-Calc. I've taken Biology Honors (C), Chemistry Honors (A), Anatomy & Physiology (B), and currently Physics, which I have an A in.

I've raised my weighted GPA from a 2.7 to a 3.66, not including the way my GPA will be affected by my night school course. Here's a snippet of my resume.

But basically, what school do you think would take me? I thought about writing a letter of appeal to NCF to include updates on my transcript, SAT scores, and just about my dedication, responsibility, and challenge that don't translate on my transcript...but say my SAT math score isn't affected. What school would be best? I refuse to go to community college. Not out of pride but because I did not work my ass off just to go to a school with noncompetitive admissions.

I need to go to a good school that will challenge me and help me grow intellectually. At the moment I probably don't look ready enough to go to NCF, but that being said, whatever school I am admitted into, I want to transfer to NCF. Can I do this after a year? Even a semester? Can I retake the SAT (even in college) in order to meet the math requirements? I'm pretty sure I'll get better at math in college. I'm almost positive. But I've applied to FSU, USF, and am almost finished with UCF. I'm also applying to FGCU and hopefully, if my SAT scores went up, I can meet admission into their honors college. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with any of these questions. Any suggestions are wonderful and greatly appreciated.

When were you rejected from New College? Recently? You’ve done a good job of raising your weighted GPA. 3.66 weighted. That’s not too bad with some of the challenges you have faced. You ask what school would accept you, you don’t want to go to community college, but then you state you want to get into honors at FGSU. So I don’t think acceptance at a school that will challenge you will be the issue; you should find that. You should definitely send an appeal to NCF, and hopefully your ACTs will come back favorably. I think also that if for some reason it comes to community college, you should buckle down, do your best, and transfer when the time comes. Some of us started at a community college and ended up doing very well in life. Good luck to you!

Yes, I was rejected like, late November. I probably sent my application in too early, and even then, there are 200 spaces so it was definitely a reach for me.
And yeah, I’m starting to think a community college may be the answer. Thanks again!

Actually, sending your application in early probably enhanced your chances. It’s a small school, and the academic climate is pretty intense. Your academic history doesn’t suggest you are up to the challenge, and though you feel you are ready, New College likely wants some objective academic evidence that you are ready. If you start at a community college and work hard, you should be able to transfer to New College. Don’t give up if New College is where you want to be – just prove that you can handle a rigorous academic course load without any sub-par class performance that requires explaining. If you do well at community college, I think you have a good shot as a transfer applicant!

Thank you! Do you think one year at a CC will suffice?

If you do well, a year might be fine, but the concern is that you might only have one semester of grades when you apply. Maybe if you attend full-time summer and fall and spring. so that you have two semesters worth of grades to submit with your application, as well as another semester in progress. This would give you more options when choosing instructors to write you recommendations as well.

I just got accepted into USF so NOW here is the plan:

summer courses at community college
fall-USF
spring-USF

Thanks again for your advice! I really appreciate it. (:

congrats on your USF acceptance!

I would have thought that getting into USF would have been harder than New College, since they emphasize grades and SATs alot more than New College. I believe they even have an admissions matrix based on those numbers. Congradulations though, I hope the next year goes really well and you can transfer with ease.
