I know someone who goes to Naperville High School (Is that what it's called?). Anyway, she attends my music school in Chicago and plays piano and clarinet.

i would have thought her name was margaret.. but she plays violin
it's naperville central hs
or naperville north

So let's hear it for Suburbia!

... Cleveland suburbia. >.<

I hear we're very similar to the suburbia that surrounds Chicago, only not as extensive and not as affluent. But it's not so bad here. Sev, the Cleveland Orchestra, CMNH, the new botanical gardens and the (sadly) closed Museum of Art - my summer home for 8 years. =(

I CAN'T WAIT to visit this summer! I know that I will love Chicago, but I'm already starting to worry about my app + essays... aaaaaack. =/

i'm worried too, to be blatantly honest, after reading all the stats of ppl who got in, i feel like i don't stand a chance.. my only strong point is that i'm on newspaper, i write well, and i've gotten national and state recognition for my advertisment designs.. suburbia is mind numblingly irritating.. i love the city bc it's just a quick commute or 45 min drive away (60 if traffic is sucky, which it always is now bc of the dan ryan construction!!!)
i am extremely worried about my app and essays..
do u guys think not posting my rank on the app (top 11%) will help???

Ask for a copy of your HS transcript - I know that my high school puts class rank at the top of their transcripts, so there is no escaping it.

17/fem/Toledo, OH (blech....)
ironically, uc seemed to be the happiest place on earth (stupid "fun+uc=error" people...)

17/F/Suburbs of Atlanta, GA (Woot...)

I'm seriously becoming more impressed with UC after spending hours on its website. It is a very detailed site that has nice bits of humor throughout. I love how its campus is described as Hogwarts-esque! Haha. I really want to attend an intellectual school since that quality is rather...ahem...lacking in my neck of the woods.

I know of two people from my school who are going to attend UC this fall. Otherwise, I would never have really noticed the school.

Chicago's residential system and campus is based around old-style gothic campuses like Oxford and Cambridge, as is Hogwart's. So it's sort of a sibling relationship.

When I explain that I lived in a "house" my first two years here I can usually say, "No, it's a house, like in Harry Potter" and they understand. Heh.

For those of you who visited, do you think that the students were really as introverted and anti-social as their reputation suggests?

Well when I visited I was asking for directions to the addmissions office, I tried to ask 3 people and they all had thier Ipod headphones on and walked by, not even flinching. That's some great focus!!

I had a totally different experience-everyone was really willing to talk to me, and my dad and I even stopped somebody for 1/2 an hour to discuss student life at Chicago.

My favorite part of visiting UChicago was when I ate lunch in the cafeteria. On my left, two women were discussing women's rights in India and on my right, kids were talking about physics. IT WAS SO COOL!! and so unlike my current high school...

I don't think that's endemic of students at Chicago, I think that's endemic of pod people.

Sozo-
Absolutely not. The self-deprecating sense of humor is just that. Anything you've heard about a lack of fun or social aptitude was probably first noted by the students themselves in a facetious way, because the students are nerds^42. (Nerdy fun is the best kind, of course.) I was lucky in that I have several friends already attending the school, so I wasn't aimlessly wandering the campus trying to meet people. While people at the school aren't known as wild party-goers and perky blondes, they were nothing but friendly to me after an initial shyness. In fact, I was welcomed into active participation in Scav during the last weekend. Rude? No. Socially awkward? Definitely. But aren't we all? at least in this thread...
P.S. My dining hall experience revolved around Hobbes, so take that as you will.

17/M/NJ

I'm most likely applying next year as well.

I will apply.

I love UChicago. The intellectual atmosphere, the quirks, the campus, the city, the phoenix. I can't wait to start my essays. I remember my first letter- I was excited because it mentioned Pablo Neruda, and it really stood out from the other letters all in that same bullet point, small class sizes, tons of clubs list that every other school sent out. I actually made a collage of my letters/envelopes from last year. It's pretty cool looking. Anybody else ever done anything interesting with their endless college mail?

im applying next year, RD if i dont get into Yale EA. I don't really want to go to UChi, feel free to bite my head off for saying that it's too pretentious and the academic environment is not competitive enough.

I'm really more of a neck sucker than a head biter.

esquared i think i have said this to you before
u creep me out! but in a good way, i'm laughing my precious head off :)
