I am sure this question has been asked before but I couldn’t find it. My D submitted 10 applications through the common app last week and her teacher recommendations were included since her Naviance account was linked with her common app account. She also requested her HS transcript through Naviance. Both the transcript and school materials are listed as pending in Naviance, which means the school is working on it. D’s first deadline is 11/1, another is 11/15, and the rest are after the first of the year. My question is when should the school be sending the materials for the first two deadlines? I tend to nag the GC and don’t want to pester about this if they have a different deadline, or a grace period, after the common app.
Some colleges need all materials by the deadline, and are serious about it. Many colleges allow school related materials to trickle in after the deadline. Go to each of your D’s school’s websites and understand their requirements.
Your D should be the one communicating with her GC, not you…unless there are pervasive issues where the GC/department are not functional.
How fast your high school will process a request for transcript depends on high school. Some are very quick, others take a while.
The only issue you have is whether it will reach the college in time. Most likely yes for a Nov 15 (or after) application deadline. As to the Nov 1 deadline, you should first determine what that deadline means. Most colleges with Nov 1 EA or ED application deadlines, actually accept required materials such as transcripts and test scores after the deadline, in which case, as long as your high school sends it by the first week or two of Nov, you will likely be fine.
Nevertheless , there are some colleges that require such materials to be in their hands by Nov 1. Those colleges make that clear on their websites, including by also usually informing you on their sites that the Oct SAT or ACT tests will likely be too late for their EA or ED consideration. If your Nov 1 school is one of those, you may want to check with the high school to assure the transcript is being sent quickly.
I would have your student talk to the GC and be clear that some of the deadlines are 11/1.
Our school needs three days to send transcripts and recs, and they won’t send them until you have submitted the app. So we have an earlier deadline, of sorts.
