Hello fellow UVA applicants, hope you can help me with this:

Part 1 of the Personal Information section asks you to list your ECs in the format provided, utilzing approximately one-half page. The format is:

Activity/Position/Grades (9,10,11,12) Hours per Week

What if you have participated in an Activity (for example Chess Club) yet have done specific things within that activity (fundraising, competitions, leadership roles) in only one or two years? How would you go about listing these activities within an activity?

You can list the specifics in the section "position held", which spells out what you did. Make sure to print out a copy of the app before you submit so you can see if any of the data in the "resume" gets cut off and you need to tighten it up.

Can you be a little more specific? Certain activities, like fundraising or organizing competitions, are generally expected of someone who is in a leadership role, so I'm not sure if it's entirely applicable. However, I think you are allowed to clarify what you did at the end of the entire list or right after your chess club point, as long as it is not too wordy.

Either you'll need to summarize (perhaps omitting some info) within a single entry, or split it up into two or more entries, if the activities are really important for you. There is a limit on the amont of space they give you so you need to be careful you don't go over the limit.

For my other applications, I wrote "see attached" to explain my Interests and Activities. I can PM it to you if you want. It's not a resume. Yes, my activites are really important to me. I have 5 major interests/activities and 2 of them are mostly done outside of school. UVA's application seemed to be very specific regarding the format so I don't want to use the attachment when applying. They indicate that you can attach a resume but to be truthful, I do not like the resume format as it does not show the depth of my interests.

I need to bump this up, as I am still uncertain on how to go about doing this.

Activity/Position/Grades/Hours per week

Are they asking you in what grades you held the positon? Or in what grades you participated in the activity? Should the activity be specific (i.e. Chess Club) or general (Chess)?

worldshopper..my S did send in an Activity sheet that summarized his four main activities. I believe UVa somewhat prefers getting the Common App online, so this was sent in under separate cover with his SSN and all on it and a brief!! cover letter. They put his Activity sheet...what would be called a brag sheet or resume in with the common app themselves. A resume or Activity sheet doesn't have to go on and on or overwhelm with details but it does help if you develop an attractive one that is easy to skim but well written.

Faline2: My g.c. has already sent my rec, transcript, etc. I take it is okay to send my activity sheet to UVA and they will place it in my file? For some reason, I thought that UVA requires all supplements to be sent in together. I am sending my application electronically because UVA seems to encourage that; therefore, attaching my activity sheet to my application is not an option.

My S never saw his transcript, rec from GC either. He sent in his Activity sheet and one brief newspaper article about him as a supplement by mail to UVa. Always put your SSN and student ID number with them at the top.
If you have doubts, just give them a quick phone call. Your goal is to present yourself in your best light. If your Activity sheet adds something without overwhelming them, send it in! I don't think they will be reviewing your file till next month, so it is fine to get all the pieces together first.
