Questions about listing EC's, awards & more

Hi, sorry if this is jumbled but this is the second time I am typing this (I got logged out when I tried to post it and it didn't save) I also apologize for the wordwall :S

Right now I am applying for the University of Florida and I have some questions about a few sections of the Application, mostly on the student resume.

My first question is on a section asking "Do you have any employment or family obligations that limit your participation in extracurricular activities? If so, please describe: "

I haven't held a job yet but I have a question about the family obligations section.

My response for the section was:
"During my Sophomore and Junior years the school board cut all funding for buses to magnet schools, which made it difficult to stay after school to participate in extracurricular activities since my mother cannot drive. I took a bus from a private company to and from school which was a financial burden and did not provide after school transportation. Because I am the oldest of my siblings that still lives at home, my participation in extracurricular activities is further limited due to my responsibilities at home. My father is deceased so I assume some responsibilities around the house in order to help my mother."

Is this a sufficient answer? Is any of it irrelevant? What should I change, if anything?

The next section asks :
"2. Extracurricular activities. List the organization(s) that are most important to you and in which you have made your highest achievements. Include your position, a description of the activity and the number of hours you contributed each week. "

I answered:
"1. JROTC drill team - 5 hours per week (during senior year only). I am a member of the unarmed platoon portion of the team. We hold practice twice a week which consists of marching and stationary movements and focusing on improving the two as well as our leadership skills. We attend several drill meets a year.
Position: member"

As you can see, the drill team is the only activity I have been in, which is this year.
Can I count other things such as hobbies as EC's? (I draw and paint a lot at home, when I'm not wasting time playing videogames) Also, was the answer I provided enough, too much, or unclear in any way?

The next section asks about my community service activities, my role, and level of involvement in each.

I answered:
"1. [Insert name here] living home - Volunteer
I volunteered at the [insert name here] assisted living home over the summer between grades ten and eleven and still volunteer there whenever the staff needs help for special events such as health fairs and parties for the residents. I am said to be one of the best volunteers the staff has had. I have volunteered for over 100 hours here.

I have other community service activities, but they were all one-day things and there's probably no need to list them. Is the answer I gave good enough? I think the last 2 sentences seem a bit awkward.

The next section says:
"Honors, awards and recognitions. List each and describe the level and the number of years of your involvement"

I didn't answer this one because I'm not sure what to put. I have some "A-B" Honor Roll Certificates, the AP Scholar award, a perfect attendance award for 2011-2012 and an award for Portfolio I (art). Should I include the Portfolio I award? I'm pretty sure it is not for the entire art department, but just for Portfolio I in general. I'm not applying for an art school so I'm not sure if I should include it. Additionally, I have a "Celebrate Freedom Foundation JROTC Award" Certificate of Achievement "for outstanding performance in academics and cadets corps activities as a first or second year JROTC cadet." I don't think it's a very special award (I'm sure a bunch of people got it since my academics aren't exactly the best.) At the top of the award there is a logo for the Celebrate Freedom Foundation and at the bottom there is a logo for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide (a university in my state). Since I'm not applying to ERAU right now, and this award appears to involve them somehow, should I include it in my app to UF and other schools? ERAU is hosting some new program at my school which is similar to a dual enrollment class. There is a military history class offered which gives 6 credit hours which are transferable for the entire year (3 per semester). Since I will be listing these credit hours on my app probably, should I include the award (I'm pretty sure the award has nothing to do with the dual enrollment thing though, since the award was given before the program started at my school.)
Also, I have a bunch of awards from karate which I did afterschool when I was in 9th and a small part of 10th grade. I'm very reluctant to include these certificates or include it as an EC I did because I hated karate with a passion and after I left one of my friends told them I hated it when they started asking where I disappeared to. I was kinda lazy in karate, but not too much and I was generally well behaved. I'm scared they'll give me a bad recommendation if they are asked and I also don't want to have to go there or call them because I'm really not in the mood to talk to them. I managed to make it to a black belt and I have a bunch of certificates for all the belts I obtained. I'm sure it would look good as an EC but if the university is going to contact them about me or if I have to contact the place then I'd rather just leave it off of the application. I wouldn't mind showing the certificates or something like that if that is all that would need to be done.
I left without warning so it seems a bit abrupt.

That seems to be it for my questions regarding the application. Would I be able to share my essay via PM with someone for critiquing? The reason I ask is because I saw someone post asking to do that and it seems like a good idea for me too. I already had my English teacher look at it and give suggestions but I really love second opinions on things.

Universities never contact EC organizations – if you really got the belts, put them on your application and don’t worry about it. I would also list Karate as a 9th/10th grade activity, and put the hours you spent in 9th grade as the hours/week. Those questions are asked in such a stupid way, I think you just have to use the number that best represents your most active year.

I think your explanation about the extra responsibilities is fine.

I would put all those items on the awards section you mentioned. The college can sort what they think is important vs. not important, but they all seem legit to me.

The volunteer one - I would take out the sentence about being best volunteer. The rest is fine.

Thank you, I’ll go make changes :)

I agree with Intparent on all things mentioned.

But I wanted to add you DEFINITELY need to mention the black belt – that is a huge accomplishment. My two sisters received theirs about 5 years ago and I went to their Black Belt Testing and was blown away by the hard work and dedication it takes. I think you are selling yourself short about being lazy with regards to karate – you had to work very hard to get where you did. I do remember some of the people in my sisters’ place lived and breathed karate and would go almost every night – just because you had a more balanced approach and other responsibilities does not mean you were lazy. Please be very proud of all your belts and allow them to shine on your application.

Good luck with the application process!

Ok I added the Karate and made edits to other things
There are questions (not optional to be filled out) about employment and programs/activities to help prepare me for higher education. For the programs/activities I answered “I have not participated in any programs to help me prepare for higher education.” I hope that doesn’t look too bad on the application but I’m sure it won’t hurt much if at all.
I haven’t held a job yet (though I applied for a job at nearly every place I could think of over the summer) so I answered “I have not been employed yet.” Unless cutting my elderly neighbor’s grass for pay on a regular basis for the past 4-5 years would counts as employment :S

Theres a section under HS education to list test score info for SAT, ACT, IB, AP, and a bunch more.

Should I list my AP exam scores there too? I’ve taken more APs than I can fit in the boxes. There’s only space for 6 scores to be labeled, and one of them I am going to use for SAT and possible another for my ACT scores. Should I leave the rest blank or just fill it up with what I can?
