Mines lukwarm since got one of his EAs acceptance. Thought he has base versions, just need twick then file. But you never know what extra work will involved until you actually do it. Whenever he told us he is working on RD applications, actually he was chatting with his peers.....now until couple of days after break, guess most of his peers getting into the application mood, he started working (kids listen more to their peers than parents, even parents have to pay for them).....after couple of days 'struggling' he finally got two 'least important but close to home' ones submitted. It was done under our pressue "Its file time now. you are not likely getting your essy any better. Just file them then forget it." Otherwise he will forever go back to twick his esseis. Four to go, originally he wants to work on another least important one "to get more experience". But we convinced him, that one can be dropped if don't have time, since the field he wants to study not as good as others. So now he is working on other two we consider 'the most important ones' simoutanously. Hope he can get all these three filed at Dec. 31st. Then if he still have time work on that last one.

You still have two days left (if your target date is set to Dec. 31st). Sounds like she is almost get the marerial done. My suggestion is start by the least important ones, file one by one (don't forgot save the copy). On the way fileing, if reminds or thought of something can be used by other most important ones, write down them immediately. He filed the 2nd one this morning around 4:00AM, then thought of something, immediately put into one of the most important ones and continue working untill 7:00AM then to the bed.....tonight going to be a long night again.

We never helicopted until now. I make sure he has some snacks during long night, H make sure if the application needs a picture, he got him one, and answer some questions. I don't get read his esseys before he file them(honestly I'm not educated enough in english to read/judge his essey). So now I'm helicopting here in CC......never thought college application is so stressful for a family. Fortunately, this is just one time stress for our family.

Thanks everyone for support. Like anotherNJmom I am helicoptering here, in CC. And try not to push too hard at home. So what I saw yesterday were three long essays on three different topics (two finished and really good, one still needs some work). I guess they should cover the comon app and WHAT ELSE supplementaries of HYPs. I saw two 150 word answers on different ECs, one of which is 190 words though. Is it really too long? Somehow it LOOKs much longer than a random the other answer, which is just under 170 words. (The 170 one is one her major EC, which she describes in her extra say). DD is somehowrelaxed about the length. Common app. seems to be more or less ready to go. IS IT TRUE THAT ONE CAN CREATE NEW VERSIONS OF COMMON APP IMMEDIATELY AFTER SENDING AN APP????? [This is what she hopes for]
MISSING: Why XXXX school and Why XXXX mjaor essays and an endess array of 2-3 line answers.
Somehow DD thinks she will start submitting today and finish before the deadline. Waiting.
Just to please me she filled out a supplement for her safety-safety school yesterday. Envelope is on the table. But she is not serious about this school, I guess

Yes. Mines have done this. And you can even change the name of your app, something like xxxx-common -> yyy-common.

Why xxxx school and why yyy major ones probably need more on line research, if the school is what you really want to go. According to him HYP doesn't give crap of this why question "of course you want to come, because we are so prestige" so your DD is safe......I've seen him worked on an essay on-and-off almost two weeks for one of his 'top choice' love/fit college in EA round, the final product looks like he's been spend a summer there (a lot of campus scene settings), but in fact he's not even been there for a college visit, thanks to the internet.......ironically, the one EA he got accepted was an overnight product, I had expected he postponed that one to RD, but he just stay up overnight got it filed 6 hours before dead line (too tight on time line for my taste). But from my SPV the whole application truely reflected his personality.

Guess with these type kids, you just have to relax. They will get the job done. But what is mom for? mom's job is constant worry. :P

btw, he has another done. three or two more to go depends on time.

See below on how to change common app version. I got this from another thread. DD used it yesterday and she was successful in getting another version created.

Changes are allowed after submission to any instution. But you have to use alternative version. You can get the instruction from Common App

From Common App's instruction:

Alternate application versions can be used in the event an applicant chooses to provide slightly different information to one institution from another institution. Below are the steps necessary to create an alternate version.

Step1: You must submit the Common Application to at least one institution first. You cannot create an alternate version until this has occurred.

Step 3: You will be presented with a screen titled Application Versions, where you will see information about the application you have already submitted. You should click on the Replicate link to make an alternate version of your submitted application. When this is complete, a second version will be visible on your screen and a special drop down list that will appear in the upper right corner of your application. You can use this drop down to move between application versions.

All data from your original version of your Common Application will be transferred to your alternate version, with the exception of any documents that you uploaded. You may edit any of this information before you submit it to another institution.

You only need to go to the special URL the first time you create an alternative version. Thereafter, additional application versions can be made by going to the Application Versions section within your original Common Application and using the Replicate link. You may make up to 10 versions, including the original version. You only need your original User Name and Password to access all versions.

You will have a separate My Colleges page and My Checklist page for each application version. Each institution can only be on the My Colleges list of one application version.

Also, one of the kids posted in the Princeton thread that she or he was having trouble uploading essays after creating an alternate version of the CA. It turned out the problem was they had a pop-up blocker enabled. Turning it off solved the essay uploading problem. Thought I'd mention it in case anyone else runs into trouble with that.

So far as kids not wanting to go, sometimes I think kids can get paralyzed because they actually want it so badly and are afraid their efforts/work aren't good enough. Here's to kids, procrastinators and early birds alike, and the parents who love them!

You don't want to wait until Jan 1st. If for any reason, network down, server failure, local hard disk broken, etc. Where do you get your poststamp at Jan. 1st?

I hold my H as hostage tomorrow, if kid is not done on line tonight or next morning. I advise him to get hard copy, and have his dad run post office.

I think the dead line should be in a working day when post office open. Like you file tax return.

No DD is not waiting for Jan 1. But she just finished the application, as stressed out as ever, her nerves are raw. She claims her brain hurts. She took off to go shopping and maybe a movie. Tomorrow morning is fine with me and her.

It takes a few days before common app shows application is downloaded after it's submitted.
I'm not 100% relaxed yet. That is why I'm on CC to calm my nerves.

I'm talking about the CommonApp site supose to send a confirmation email back after you hit submit botton. He diddn't get it. Usually he would three, one confirm CommonApp, one confirm SuplementApp, one confirm Payment. But he diddn't got one from AommonApp for this one, althought got Payment confirmation....may be its nothing. The anxiouse killing me.

My son took "vacation" during the 4 days from end of school to Christmas, and then came down with the flu as soon as applications were to be worked on. I feel terrible for him, but he's basically better now and has been churning out about 1.5 essays per day, in between large doses of Tylenol. He had the common app main essay done long ago, but these supplement essays cannot be just an afterthought. It's been an interesting process. Talking at dinner tonight, he said he thinks it's actually been really good practice - being able to come up with an idea, outline the essay, and write it and revise it in an afternoon gives one a feeling of accomplishment. And before this, I've personally never gotten to see his writing process, or the final product. It's a good way to learn more about your own kid. Nearly done now! Congrats to all you moms and dads who have survived this!

so if a deadline is Jan1, in theory they have until midnight on Jan 1 to submit the application?? ..not midnight of the 31st .. this used to make sense, but I think we are losing our perspective ... :)

Thanks for helping with Common App question everyone!
Congratulations 99cents!
My DD is still working. The first app through Common App went out yesterday, the second safety, but a better one, the one she may really consider. Her goal for today is to submit apps to three super-reaches.
A pleasant surprise in the morning - the Why Yale essay is just 300 CHARACTERS long! Maybe a brain twister (how you can shorten 60 words to 50 while staying within formal rules of English grammar), but definitely faster than a real Why XXX College essay. Does it mean that DD will join us for New Year dinner tonight?

Another stupid Common App question: DD insists that she typed her current courses into the Common App ..... but they do not show anywhere on the print out. Is this true?????
