application questions

In addition to the recommendation letter that my counselor writes for me, could I send more than one additional recommendation? If so, could either be from someone who has known me for a while, but isn't necessarily an academic teacher, like a coach or music teacher?

Also, if one of my family members have attended UVA, does that benefit me for admission? If so, how should I indicate that on my application?

Yes, you can.
You can I think send up to as many as you like, but don't do 37!
According to DeanJ, someone did that, and they still got REJECTED.

And, I think when I called UVA on the similar issue, they say they perfer people who have known you longer and better then just a teacher, ie SENIOR YEAR.

Yes, No.
UVA says Alumni Relation is good, but it's not as important as like GPA, SAT, Essays.
Iono how you would tho.
My friend did it with a Rec Letter =D

There are places to list where your parents and siblings went to school on the application.

Alumni aunts, cousins, etc. don't factor into the admission process.

You can send in additional recommendations. It's good to send in recommendations from people who know you well. Alumni relations help if you're OOS. Being a legacy would give you the same consideration as an instater.

thanks for answering the questions, guys :)

and one last thing: how do i tell my teachers to write the recs if i'm applying online? (in other words, how does it work?)

How do you think it should work? I'm curious because like most schools, we have something built into the online application, but we're always looking for new ways to do things.

Dean J- while we're on this topic, I know transfers aren't required to send recs, but would they be taken into consideration at all if they're sent, and would this help show more interest in the school?

Dean J,
I'm not sure how it works now because I didn't apply online. However, I think one idea might be to have a space where students could put their teacher's email address and automatically have an email sent to the teacher with a link to where they should fill out the recommendation. Then have some way for the student to check to see if the recommendation has been submitted.

i think wahoo2007 brings up a great point
it sounds to be very efficient

wahoo.

That is how it is done on online, by the way. You place your teacher's email in a box, and click "Send"
An email arrives to the teacher with the info neccessay to write/send the recs =)
At least, that's how i did it.

Although offline wouldn't be bad, just more work for the applicant filers.

well, then I guess I ought to be designing web pages :)

We'll read whatever you send us. Plenty of transfer students have sent recommendations in the past.

Nice to see that the way we handle online recommendations is intuitive. Teachers seem to like the feature, since they don't have to keep track of forms and envelopes.
