I have a rule not to get involved with internet squabbles, but this escalated so hilariously that I wanted to be apart of it.

The Pinko- I actually would go as far as to call their behavior amateurish. In opening this up to female applicants, they were bringing us into a partnership. They wasted our time, and I find it offensive. It wouldn’t be tolerated anywhere else, but this is Deep Springs. It’s a anomaly and thus there is no real accountability system. Actually more than the ruling, I’m frustrated by this lack of respect for our time and energy.

On a separate note, does Apcom really read this? I would kind of hope they would be looking into more pressing matters, like potential roadblocks to Coeduation…

That actually sounded more scathing than I meant it too. I’m generally understanding of the situation. This is how institutes change. It was just frustrating and I felt the letter did not appropriately acknowledged the mistakes they make.

“The Trustees of Deep Springs voted decisively in favor of coeducation, and are currently working through a legal process to implement this decision. We are optimistic enough to begin recruitment, but legal matters are difficult to predict with complete certainty. For this reason we want to inform prospective applicants that we may be prevented from admitting them to the college in the summer of 2013. Since submitting a college application never guarantees admission, we hope this won’t discourage applicants from getting interested in Deep Springs. We look forward to hearing from you.”

Deep Springs’ original statement, reproduced. Interpret it as you will.
Apologies if this is redundant/superfluous.

Whoa. I will respond to nothing except one wild claim: I’m legitimately a female high school senior from the Midwest, not a current Deep Springs student “drunk with power.” Sorry?! Can’t prove this one but you’re really just gonna have to take my word; I’d assume that a member of ApCom would choose to just exit the conversation after being exposed. Hminot: true, you didn’t say anything too radical, so I’m sorry if I seemed overly scolding.

And, ugh, fine, regarding my apparent solipsism: I don’t mean that the event itself is neither good nor bad. A favorable outcome existed before it happened–a successful transitioning, and my enrollment. I think that the failure to transition to coeducation is, indeed, bad. But when I consider things from a very individualized point of view–from my perspective, currently in the process of deciding where in the world I will be next year, after I graduate (with my double x chromosomes in tow, sorry areuseriouskid!)–I can choose to say, “A bad thing has just happened to me, and now my situation is bad.” Ultimately, this decision would be bleak, and there’s a more empowering alternative, i.e., the way I took it: “THIS SUCKS I HATE THIS I AM CALLING MY BEST FRIEND AND GETTING REALLY UPSET OVER THE PHONE” for about four hours. Then I went for a run. Then I watched a movie. Then I was still really sad. Then I went to sleep. Next day was significantly better. Today is also pretty good, as I’m looking into volunteer farming internationally. There is a convenient saying that covers my gist: “s*** happens.” I don’t blame the Trustees for trying to enroll female students so immediately. It’s exciting and should happen literally as soon as possible.

My mother got a phone call today, but they wouldn’t say if I made the second round or not. Tried to call back but the line was busy. I’m kind of surprised on one else has posted about being called yet, since my name is towards the end of the alphabet.

Do they only call students who made the first cut, or do they call all students? I certainly wouldn’t want to have to personally call people to deliver bad news over and over, but DS is after all strange.

Possibly. The order (from perusing previous years’ threads) appears to be pretty random, name-wise, and took place over two or three days.
I’m trying to stay hopeful.
Anyone listening to stress-alleviating music? I’m going to link two songs, if anyone wants to listen.

ThePinko: It won’t let me reply to your message because I don’t have enough posts. Try not to worry too much. And yes, I know that’s impossible.

I received a call from the college on Friday afternoon letting me know I am through to the 2nd round. The college said I would receive notification of further details by email and mail. I am sure they work office hours and with around 40 applicants to call it will take a few days.

Sorry to hear that Pinko, I unfortunately didn’t make the cut either. Good luck wherever you go! Keep us posted! And good luck to everyone who did make it to round 2!

Hi, all. Another hopeful Deep Springer here. I’ve been secretly watching this thread since the beginning of this school year.

I have two questions:

Who has received notification so far?

and

Has everyone who submitted an application received confirmation from Deep Springs that it was received? I’m paranoid that mine got lost in the mail or something.

Yikes. I think everyone’s been notified. You definitely want to email them–maybe they’ll still let you send in your application for consideration.
