Application Scorecard to Date

Hi all

Its been a while since I visited. I got a lot of great advice here last year about the process when my DD was a junior. Now that we are 1/2 way through senior year and well into the application process (all applications submitted with some early results), I thought I would share our journey.

First of all, lots different than we expected because of covid, although not all in a bad way. Virtual auditions way less costly and stressful for Mom and Dad since we aren’t traveling all over.

Also, over the summer DD diversified her interest and has been applying to as many straight acting programs as MT, which opens up more options.

Here is her scorecard so far:

— ECU: Academically accepted, passed MT prescreen.
— VCU: (acting) Based on virtual audition, received “special invitation” for “especially talented” applicants for an early interview. That occurred today, rather than in January, and she should find out whether she is admitted before Christmas.
— Carnegie Mellon: Passed prescreen
— Syracuse: Passed acting prescreen; did not pass MT
— Ithaca: Rejected via prescreen
— Temple: Passed MT prescreen, also applied to acting (no prescreen)
— Elon: Passed prescreen
— PSU: Prescreen results tbd
— Michigan: Prescreen results tbd
— Northwestern: Interview next week
— NYU: Application submitted today
— Christopher Newport: Audition tbd
— James Madison: Auditions tbd
— Boston U (acting): Audition tbd
— Marymount Manhattan: Audition tbd

So thats where we are.Things are looking good for VCU, and we are Virginia people, so it will be good for her to get that in the bag. Its not her first choice, nor a straight MT program, but it is a well regarded drama program with upper level MT concentration that she can see herself being happy in.

Michigan & CMU (MT); Northwestern & Boston (acting) are the top of her list but are obviously longshots (from both competitiveness and affordability standpoints). Mom and Dad are pulling for Virginia state schools. If she gets in to VCU, CNU falls off the list but I am not sure whether she would chose VCU or JMU should she get in to both. She has really become more passionate about straight theater lately but is still drawn to MT.

Here is where we are at for my D. She did a mix of MT, Drama and some BA Theatre schools.

Pace - did not pass prescreen
Syracuse - did not pass prescreen (my alma mater so this hurt)
Penn State - did not pass prescreen
Ithaca - redirected to Acting, auditioning in January
Carnegie - redirected to Acting, auditioning in February
BOCO - passed prescreen, had audition. Applied EA
NYU Steinhardt - applied ED, had audition
The New School - applied EA, had audition
Juilliard - got an audition, did not move forward
Marymount - auditioning in January
UMich - no word on prescreen
CCM - no word on prescreen
Elon - no word on prescreen
Manhattan School of Music - no word on prescreen
USC - no word on prescreen
UCLA - no word on prescreen
Sarah Lawrence - EA, deferred to regular admission
Bennington - EA, waiting results
Bard - EA, waiting results
It was a big list, getting shorter by the day!

The redirected to acting ones are interesting. I didn’t know that was an option. When our older child went through the college application process (visual art) I knew all the ins and out because she was clueless. This time around, DD is on top of everything and doesn’t want our help. She applied EA to a number of schools that did not require prescreens so may in fact have some auditions scheduled but she just hasn’t told us.

Has any female applicant received both an academic and artistic acceptance from the same MT program yet?

Here is where my son is at so far:

— Arcadia: Submitted Audition via Acceptd waiting on both academic and artistic
— Ball State: Academically admitted, need to re-do digital submissions, they have changed requirements since he originally uploaded.
— Coastal Carolina Univ.: Redirected to BA Theatre Program, and Kris reached out and asked him to consider the program, Academically admitted
— Dean College: Academically and Artistically Accepted into their MT BA program.
— Elon: Waiting on both PreScreen and Academics
— High Point University: Applied EA, submitted videos, and had interview should hear back this week.
— LIU: Applied in September, waiting academics, submitted in Acceptd and auditioned on 11/13: waiting on decisions
— Manhattanville: Admitted Academically awaiting digital audition results
— Marymount: Waiting on Academics and Digital Audition Submission
— Molloy: Waiting on Academics and PreScreen Results
— Montclair: Waiting on Academics (was told he cleared and was passed to Theatre Dept) Waiting on digital submission (maybe a prescreen, can’t remember)
— Muhlenburg: Applied EA waiting to hear
— Pace: Academically accepted, did not pass prescreen
— Rider University: Awaiting Academics, Applied BFA MT, Redirected to BFA Acting, had audition 12/12
— Slippery Rock: Academically Accepted, waiting on audition results
— SUNY Cortland: Applied EA still waiting to hear, Have to reshoot the audition, they want full body for all videos.
— SUNY Fredonia: Academically Accepted, redirected to BA program
— UHartt: Applied, waiting to hear on both academic and prescreen
— UNCG: Applied EA, waiting to hear, Redirect to BA program with MT minor
— Wagner: waiting on academics, invited to audition, putting audition videos together
— Western Connecticut University: Academically Accepted, redirected to BA Performing Arts
We have a long way to go but a few nice BA programs that he has been accepted into.
We will be working on new videos and new dance routines in the next two weeks.

My daughter has been accepted academically and artistically to LIU and Nebraska Wesleyan. Sounds like she won’t hear from a majority of the others until March.

Yes. UArts, but those applications are tied together.

My daughter has both from Nebraska Wesleyan, Southeast Missouri St. and Gainesville Theatre Alliance/Brenau.

Update. My DD heard today that she passed the UMICH Prescreen. I am kind of surprised, I have to say

Now that all prescreen results are in for my D and we have a break until auditions pick up again, I guess it makes sense to post in this thread.

    • Prescreen/Audition through Moonifieds

Artistic:

Prescreen No: Carnegie Mellon

Prescreen redirect to Acting (same impact as a no): Syracuse

Audition No: Baldwin Wallace*

Auditions completed, awaiting answer: BoCo, CAP21*, Montclair State*, Pace, Point Park*, ShenCo*, Texas Christian*, U Miami*

Auditions completed, told still under consideration by school: Elon, Missouri State*, Penn State

Auditions scheduled: CCM, Coastal Carolina*, Florida State*, Hartt*, Indiana*, MSM, Otterbein*, Roosevelt, Texas State, Arizona, Michigan, UNCSA, Webster

Offerred enrollment: UArts

Academically: All news here is positive. 12 of 26 remaining accepted, but with Michigan and Penn State allowing auditions I would be surprised if D does not get in the outstanding schools - she missed early admission by a day or two so I assume that answers will come in 2021 for those, as well as the ones tied to artistic decisions.

Update; DD Accepted at VCU. Theater Performance BFA with a MT concentration option. She is leaning more heavily toward acting but still wants to sing so this would be a god option (also in state tuition). But nowhere near her first choice. If time comes to chose between Theater and MT at schools where she has applied to both programs (NYU, CMU, JMU or Michigan) I am not sure which way she would go. Oh well, I hope she has the luxury of such choices.
