applications online and the essays (Admissions Daniel)

I was filling out my application just last night and when I hit the preview button, the last few words of my essay were cut off. I know the instructions tell us to continue on the additional information page, but I'm just worried that jumping from the essay page to the additional information page will detract from my essay (I feel that the last few words are important and that jumping will lower the effect of the words). Am I worrying over nothing?

thanks =D

I'm not AdmissionsDaniel, but does this information help (it's what you see first when you click the "Print/Print Preview" button)?:

NOTE!

* The additional information and essay pages will display a maximum (approx. only) of 6000 characters.

  • If you find your text NOT fitting on the PDF page as you expected, try the following steps:
    1. Cut and paste your long text into NotePad.
    2. Remove any small black squares that appear (these are XML formatting codes which Notepad cannot interpret).
    3. Remove all excessive spacing between paragraphs and in front of the first word of paragraphs.
    4. Cut the text from NotePad and paste back where it came from.
    5. Save and continue.

thanks =]. i feel so dumb for missing that part

still isnt working though. argh ill probably spend the next few hours on it -_-

have you gone through your essay and tried to cut out filler words? (i.e. really, very)

yeah thats all been done. i got it to fit =D

bravo! :)

What is the maximum number of characters the common app will allow for the long essay?

5000 I think.

I can only comment about the JHU Online Application (<a href="http://jhu.applicationsonline.com/%5B/url%5D">http://jhu.applicationsonline.com/</a>)
... questions about the Online Common Application should be directed to their Help Desk (<a href="https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/TechSupport.aspx%5B/url%5D">https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/TechSupport.aspx</a>)

As far as submitting one's essay online through the JHU Online Application, I strongly recommend reading the following:

"--When writing your essay, you have two options: You can either type it directly into the space provided in the essay field, or you can copy the essay from any word processing software application and paste it into the essay field.

Be aware that the Internet does not recognize certain text formats. You will not be able to italicize, bold, or underline any part of your essay. Johns Hopkins University understands these Internet formatting restrictions.

Please note: Johns Hopkins University has set specific limits as to the length of your essay. If you need extra space for any part of the application, including the essay, simply go to the last part of the application and include any additional information in the additional pages provided. If you still need more room, contact Johns Hopkins University directly to ask how to best forward any additional information."

I also agree that the notes listed in SodiumFree's post above should be helpful.

Three final things to note:

(1) If you split your essay between the essay box and the additional information section, it will be re-combined when your online application is printed and passed to the Admissions counselors.

(2) There is a 6000 character limit, but there is no word limit for our essays. The character limit is created for the online form. If you need additional space to present your essay(s) then you can mail them in and just write in the essay spaces online that essays will be mailed in.

(3) If you have any concerns with how your essay will look when submitted online, just mail it in. When mailing include your full name, birth date, and school so it can easily be matched with the rest of your application.
