I've been accepted to the University, and am interested in the Art and Design minor. Is a portfolio needed for this program? when do/can I start taking A&D courses? when/how do I tell umich I want to dual enroll?

I’m pretty sure you would have had to apply for dual enrollment when you filled out your application. On common app they ask you and you send a portfolio and you can either be accepted into both colleges or just one. Without being enrolled you may be able to just take some courses but I’d call admissions to see what the earliest point is to try and apply to the a&d school.

I don’t think there is an a&d minor, although there are some dual enrollment programs. Call A&D admissions, they are wonderful and very responsive, they can help you.

I’ve sent them an email but if my q is not answered I’ll give them a call.

The minor is fairly new, fredmar. Here’s the link if you’re interested

Great, I didn’t know that before. Good luck

^BC, technically speaking, you don’t actually “declare” a major - or minor, until your sophomore year. So take the courses as outlined for the minor and make your declaration at the end of sophomore year.
When you are accepted to LSA, it is not “program specific.” However, AD is its own school, same as the School of Music. So, when you come for orientation, ask your adviser if you will need permission to attend those classes outlined in the minor, or if they’re open. My son is at the school of music, but had been able to take certain AD classes (which are requirements of his major, as strange as that sounds.)
Congrats on your acceptance!

PS – Your answer is in this statement from the AD Minor Page:

That means you aren’t expect to, nor CAN you, declare anything until you’ve matriculated as an LSA student, taken a drawing course, met the requirement, THEN worked with an adviser to plan/map out your course selections and obtain written permission to proceed.

^ thank you very much! :)
