Applied Math Major transfer

Hi I'm currently a community college student in California and hoping to transfer to Berkeley. My math grades are great so I think an actuarial science major is a good choice for me. UCLA and UCSB have the actuarial major, but I want to go to berkeley and double major in math and econ. Can i transfer to berkeley in math major and double major in econ afterwards? Can anyone tell me what is the differences between majoring in math/econ and majoring in actuarial? But if I transfer to berkeley, I can only transfer as applied math, I've heard a lot of peoples saying that an applied math major is not marketable for job, the underemployed rate is quite big..does anyone has ideas of the current situation? Thanks~

Hey @Viviinna‌,

I am a transfer student who got into Cal this Fall and am thinking of switching to applied math

I don’t know if you still need an answer but I would go to the Career Center on Berkeley for that: https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/AppMath.stm

Relative to other average salaries at Cal, that is pretty good. Also, Cal Mathematics is top in the nation and it would definitely help you jobwise. I think much of the limitations in marketability of the math major is stemmed from the pure math major. That’s because pure math majors typically are for grad school, so they don’t have the applicable skills in the job market. If you do applied math in operations research, cs, econ, etc i think you will be very marketable. Look through career reports from UCLA and UCSB (i am not too familiar but i checked UCLA and UCSB here:

And look at applied math. If you are still iffy you should talk to the Math counselors here, they are pretty nice I heard  good luck!
