Apply for BFA; Get Accepted BA?

Hello Everyone,

I have read through alot of the Musical Theatre threads as well as the Theatre threads and I can't quite recall this topic being mentioned before although I'm pretty sure it has been discussed.

I was wondering that if I audition at a school for the BFA program, is there anyway to indicate that I would also liked to be considered for their BA program as well?

Specifically, Emerson allows to pick a first and second choice major; however I cannot pick a BA in Theatre Studies as my second choice major. Does this mean that its BFA or nothing? Because if so, I'd rather hedge my bets and apply for a BA which I figure is easier to get into because I like the school so much.

I've heard of cases of people who apply to Musical Theatre BFA being offered spots in a Theatre BFA and was wondering if they did the same for BA and BFA.

The answer to your question is very school specific. At Emerson, if you select the BFA, then you can not hedge your bets by indicating the BA in Theatre as your 2nd choice but you can indicate a major in a different department.

I know of one gal during last year's audition season who was interested in BFA programs. At least twice at auditions, she was asked if she would be interested in the school's BA in Theater Arts program. She was caught offguard, and answered "no". She thought if she had said "yes", that she would not be considered for their BFA program. As it turned out, she was not accepted to any BFA programs; and says that she would have definitely been happy in the Theater Arts program....she just hadn't considered that before.

I was just at Emerson on Friday with my D and this topic was addressed. It is very confusing, but this was my impression: both BFA and BA are by audition only. The numbers aren't that different, they only take slightly more BA's than BFAs. If you want Musical Theatre, that is only a BFA program, although I assume you could take dance and voice in the regular theatre program, but it wouldn't specifically be musical theatre. When we asked the student who ran the performing arts round table he said that the panel was looking for the same things for both programs from the candidates. So, I came away with the impression that at least when it comes to acting (not theatre education or scene design, or that kind of thing) it wasn't any easier to get into the BA program. I would still suggest contacting the school directly and/or checking the website--it is confusing!
But, since this thread is not just about Emerson, I would be curious to hear about other schools where both the BA and BFA were offered.

I am not sure if this is what is being asked, but when you audition at Otterbein you are considered for all their programs at the same time no matter what you apply for. For example, if you apply for Musical Theatre and they don't accept you into the program they might offer you a spot in their Drama dept or their Vocal Performance dept depending on the strength of your audition.

University of Central Florida - if you audition for BFA, you may be accepted into the BA if turned down for the BFA.
