The time has come where I have to start making decisions. I have found that Emerson is my top choice school, and so I want to have the best chances of getting in as possible. I figure getting into the BA program would be easier than the BFA program. I have visited the school and the BA program does sound appealing; I want to explore directing and playwriting as well as acting. However, upon further investigation into the course load it appears that there really aren't a lot of acting classes available to the BA students. I'm still trying to focus on improving my acting skills. I'm also concerned that as a BA student I would have trouble finding more acting opportunities. So would it be smart to apply BA because I really love the school itself and I'm still getting somewhat of what I want? Or should I just go all out and audition for the BFA? If anyone is familiar with the programs your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can you apply to both? I know that is an option at other schools.

If your main objective is performance training, perhaps it would be best to focus on schools where you are pretty sure to be able to do that, rather than fixating on Emerson.

There are threads on this forum about non-audition BFAs and performance-oriented BAs with suggestions that you might want to look at.

Unless something has changed from two years ago, it is possible to audition for the BFA in Acting at Emerson (or even the BFA in MT) and instead be offered a place in the BA Theatre studies which could also specify the Acting track or other track. I believe MTs can say that they would also be willing to be considered for the BFA in Acting but all BFAs could also be accepted into a BA program either in theatre studies OR in any other major that you indicate you would be willing to be considered for which could include things completely outside of the performance area. If you are considering going straight into the BA in Acting, that track still requires an audition. So I guess I’d say, why not audition for the BFA and see where it leads?

On the other hand, the BA track may provide more flexibility in your other interests like playwriting and directing since there is also a BA theatre studies degree featuring those concentrations as well. The real question I’d want to get answered therefore is this: what is the exact nature of the coursework in the advanced studio training for the BFA track? Does the studio work include coursework in playwriting and directing? If it does, then you could still have it all plus the acting training you seek in the BFA track. If it doesn’t then perhaps the BA is a better route for you.

In any event, I’d let that discovery drive the route you take more than odds of admission to one or the other because if both routes will give you the coursework you are seeking, you can audition for the BFA and end up in the BA anyway. (Unless things have changed. Verify!!!) The other thing is if you want to do the BFA, you MUST get into the BFA from the get to (unless that has changed too. Verify!) There is no means for a BA to switch to a BFA after the fact. However in reverse, if you start out in the BFA and then decide you’d rather be in the BA track, you can make that change.

bumping this…
Hi everyone! Pretty new here, but I just got accepted into Emerson’s BA. It’s the program I preferred, so I’m very excited. Does anyone have any insight on how many BA students there are in a class/grade though? At one point I knew this information, but everything is beginning to mix together… Oops! Thanks so much!

My D just got accepted into the BA program as well and I think I remember them saying that they took 30 something BA Theatre Studies students each year, 18 BFA Acting and 18 MT. Best of luck to you, OMGCOLLEGE101

My son applied to the BA… I think because they have a location in Europe that BA’s have an opportunity to travel to?

Oh yeah… He got wait listed… Now that we think of it, we think Emerson might not be all that great anyway. You guys should TOTALLY turn them down. I mean… no biggie right?
(joking of course) Many congrats!!

I know someone currently in Emerson’s BA acting program who did the Europe trip this year; she spent time in so many countries and had a fantastic time.

Does anyone have a sense of how many kids get in off the wait list generally?
