UA started the generous NMF scholarships several years ago. Auburn just started to do this a couple of years ago - probably because UA was taking all the best students…LOL

When my S was NMF, we didn’t even bother to apply to Auburn because they were only offering tuiton for NMF.

I don’t know how either school “pays” for the NMF schollies. I’ve heard that UA pays for them out of some foundation or endowment, but I’ve never seen verification of that.

Auburn is a very nice school, but it is ridiculously short on housing. Does Auburn’s NMF package include guarantees for honors housing? When I visited, they only had one honors res hall; Have they added any more??

i double checked the honors section in mybama, the deadline for uhp and ihp was the “priority” deadline,so assume you can apply after. I just wrote down the priority one.

Okay, maybe I was just one of the rare students who looked at schools based on what it would eventually cost my family. Money is a good reason to convince one’s parent’s to let them move OOS. My home state, WA, does not give much in terms of merit aid. The UW gave me none, another gave me 2k/year for 2 years. I’m at UA for rougly the same cost as commuting to the UW from home, maybe less.

I agree, UA has 4 honors dorms, 6 if you count Mallet and Blount. If I remember, your daughter is not NMSF/NMF, so you will be paying full price for housing. Many students do move off campus to some really nice apartment “villas” starting sophomore year though. The NMF housing scholarship (it does not pay for food) must help in retaining some upperclassmen in the dorms, though UA does not have very much on-campus housing to begin with.

^^^
UA may need more on-campus housing…but it does have a lot. UA does guarantee on campus housing for all freshmen.

I don’t know how many students can be housed in UA housing (including the family/married housing), but it has to be quite a big number. The frats and the sorority houses also “house” many students on campus (The greeks rent their campus land for $1 per year).

I counted 27 residence halls at UA…plus Greek housing.

Actually, UA has 6 honors residence halls… Lakeside West, Ridgecrest South, Ridgecrest West, Riverside East, Riverside North, and Riverside West.

SEA-tide, you are not the only one who looked at the bottom line. My son did the same thing, and he could not find any of his schools with a better financial offer than what UA provided. That’s one of the big reasons he is there and loves it, too.

Your child will likely make it!
I’ve never heard of a kid not making it who didn’t “cause” the problem.

Kids don’t make it to NMF status, if…
…they don’t do the paperwork (or don’t do it correctly), don’t score well on the SAT, forget to have SAT scores sent to NM corp (must do that!!!), don’t have a good GPA, are a discipline problem and can’t get the principal rec, or does some other crazy thing.

Last year, a son’s classmate with super high stats didn’t make NMF because he wrote a snide and sarcastic essay about NM process on his NM paperwork.

has your son dotted all i’s and crossed all t’s??? has he sent his SAT scores to NMC? if so, I’d bet he’s in. :)

you make it sound effortless and heartening but I can’t imagine out of the 16,000 students, half of them who don’t make finalists run into the problems you mentioned above.
Does the finalist list also take into consideration uniform distribution among all States?

I’m not sure I understand what you mean … “…half of them who don’t make finalists…”

Out of the 16,000 NMSF, 15,000 make NMF. Only about 1000 don’t make it. Those who don’t make it have typically caused the problem themselves. There have been some rare cases where schools have screwed up and have missed deadlines.

Since those who don’t make it “cause” the problem, and are a small number, there is no reason to look for uniform state distribution. Typically, the rule of thumb is that the top 1% of each state makes NMF. Of course, there are exceptions.

NMC doesn’t take a child out of the running if the child has done all that he’s supposed to do in the correct manner with good stats. And, the school does what its supposed to do… :)

Every NMSF child at my kids’ school has made it to NMF, except for the one case detailed above. Because of that one instance, our GC has been told that she must look over the packets (and read the essays) before they are sent in. Our principal loves to brag about how many NMF the school gets, so he was VERY annoyed that this one kid’s stupid essay kept him from NMF and kept the school from having 6 NMFs (and that’s a lot for a small Catholic school.)

You’re absolutely right mom. For some reason, I thought half of the semi finalists make it to the final round. That’s where I got my 8,000. What a relief to know only 1000 don’t make the final list.
We had 6 NMSF from my S school. It is also a Catholic HS with 900 students. I wonder how does it compare to your S’s school.
