"apply to other colleges" affects chance?

Rice supplement says, "If you have applied or expect to apply to other colleges or universities this year, please name them."

Why does Rice ask this? Will listing Rice's rival colleges affect the chance? I am applying to HYP etc, but Rice is one of my top choices. I am wondering if listing my college list would affect my chance.

I have no idea how they use this in their admissions process. It may just be for their own data collection, but it may factor into the decision somehow. I wouldn’t really worry about it, though.

If the question is required, you must list all of the colleges to which you have applied or to which you plan to apply. The statement you sign when you submit your application says that you have filled out the application honestly to the best of your knowledge. You cannot sign that honestly if you do not answer this question honestly. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether it’s going to affect your chances, because you have to do it if it’s a required question. If it’s not a required question, you should still do it. I listed a lot of schools that are competitors for Rice’s admitted students, yet was still accepted. Most people applying to Rice are probably also applying to institutions that compete with Rice for yield – they’re unlikely to turn you away on those grounds.

Also, I haven’t heard any allegations that Rice engages in yield protection by rejecting qualified applicants if they don’t think Rice is your first choice, so I doubt this has much of an effect on your application. Last I checked, demonstrated interest was considered in admissions, but it wasn’t all that important.

It doesn’t affect admissions chances. I applied to five Ivies and several other peer schools and listed them all, and I’m still at Rice. I know countless others who did too. It’s only natural that students applying to Rice would be applying to schools of similar caliber, so they won’t be upset or anything when you list HYP, etc.

What exactly they use it for, I’m unsure. I would highly recommend you do a search on your question, though, as a couple other posters and I have provided a lot of information/discussion regarding this topic once or twice before.

I agree with the posts above. Be honest, do not leave any out because you think that Rice will reject you because of the list. I listed 7 top 20 schools and still got in. Many other posters here have done the same and have been admitted and attended Rice.

We speculate that it is for informational purposes.

Yeah I listed 14 other schools; five were Ivies, two were top 20 LACs, and five were top 20 universities. (Yay QuestBridge, free apps to many schools!)

It’s pretty safe to say that the question isn’t used in the decisions process itself.

Thanks guys!

You should call or email admissions and ask (anonymously).

^^ Why would admissions say anything other than ‘Please list all the colleges you have applied to?’

This question gets way too much airtime each year. Many people here have put all the colleges they applied to, including several top 20 Universities, and have been admitted. It is not worth this much worry.

What if I submitted my supplement for Rice and then decided to apply to another college that I hadn’t listed? Or actually, two other colleges. Haha. I really love Rice, and it’s my number 2 school so I hope this doesn’t affect me!!

You should be fine. You can always send Rice an email to let them know just to be sure.

Don’t send them an email, they won’t care. It’s not something that matters a whole lot if you’re honest in the rest of your application, so just be honest in this too.
