College you plan on applying for?

I have seen this question twice now: Its a question on the Rice Supplement and the UT Scholarship app

It says something like. "List other college in which you plan on applying or have already applied to"

I was wondering, what is the purpose of this question? Does it hurt me to put very prestigious schools on the Rice Supp? I wonder if Rice asks this because they want to increase yield and if a student is applying to 10 other prestigious schools there's not a very big chance that they will come if accepted.
For scholarships, do they ask to see what other schools you are applying in order to see if they are public/private schools to see if you are applying to schools that cost a lot or are prestigious?
(Even if it does affect decisions, I doubt that it is large)

My final question about this is...If I only put some of the schools I plan on applying on the supplement...thats ok right? I don't really see a point in lying.

Yes, the assumption is that colleges ask this to see where they are in the selectivity range for the applicant. How they actually use this information probably varies from school to school, some may use it for making decisions, but hopefully it’s more an information gathering exercise for most schools.

IMO, it’s none of their business where you’re applying, and you should list whichever schools you want. You might want to ask on the UT forum to see how others have approached this and whether they think it makes a difference for merit aid or not.
