It looks like there are three Economics related majors in UCLA, Business Economics, Economics, and Mathematics/Economics. Is it a higher chance for a girl who is doing good in math (taking post AP math in senior year) to get admitted by UCLA if she applies Mathematics/Economics than regular Economics? How easy for a freshman in UCLA to transfer from Math/Econ to Business Econ or Econ?
Economics is not a direct admit major at UCLA.
It will not matter which major you put down as if you are admitted to UCLA you would be admitted to the college of L &S undeclared and would have to declare your major after taking prereq classes and meeting a certain GPA by junior year.
Thank you! My kid likes Economics but she doesn’t have EC directly related with it. Her HS math is the only outstanding. Does UCLA like to see if you already did something with your future interest field?
Also how easy to transfer between different schools within UCLA? For example, from School of Public Health to College of Letters and Science?
Great ECs don’t need to relate to a major. Sports, band, walking dogs at the shelter etc.
That she’s involved and making an impact is what matters - not that’s it is major related.
Good luck to her.
Since L & S is the largest college at UCLA, I think it is easier to switch to it rather then into a smaller college, like Public Health.
My daughter was admitted to UCLA in 2022 as a pre-political science major. She dropped it witha week and is now an History and Econ double major. It doesn’t matter—she can apply for anything in L&S College and switch it up. All you need to do is take the pre-requisite classes as a pre-major.
Her ECs were across the board—newspaper, music and theater, and local government. UCLA cares about well rounded leaders. Pay attention to the PIQs and use the questions to show different facets of your experience and character.
They also care about grades — straight As and plenty of rigor. Mine took AP Econ, AP Calc AB, AP government, AP chem, AP psych, AP Stats, AP Lang and Lit, APUSH, AP euro, AP art history good luck!!
UCLA Letters and Science does not take your major into account for frosh admissions. And the PIQ essay questions do not ask about your career goals. So not having any business or economic related ECs will not matter
There are a wide variety of factors we consider when admitting our newest Bruins each year. We seek students whose personal stories and rich experience bring the type of perspective and leadership that we value. We seek intellectually curious students who have grown through their academic work and are ready to both contribute to and benefit from the UCLA community. Ours is a highly selective admission process but know that we read every application closely and seek to know our applicants as best we can before making our final admission decisions.
Thank you all the information provided here.
A student who likes math and is good at it may prefer the math economics major over the business economics or economics major. A student considering PhD study in economics will likely find the math economics major to be better pre-PhD preparation.
