I am applying as a high school junior to Stanford EA or Yale EA.
They are both my favourite schools and I don't know which to choose.
My SATs are in Otc and Nov ,so I don't know what they'll be like.
1.Stanford requires much more essays in such limited time while Yale requires fewer essays but TOEFL and interview.
2.Yale admins said that they rarely have junior applicants and they suggest students to finish high school while stanford welcome high school juniors.
3.Also,from CC and my friends It seems that this year Stanford EA applicants are much stronger and more competitive than yale(I mean average) while Yale seems to be larger in amount.
I really don't know which one I should apply to.
I hope to major in chemistry, biology, economics or applied math.
And I am a female from mainland China.
Some advices~Thank you!

if you are a good writer, you should have no problem writing the Stanford essays even though I know there are many to handle. Since you are an international AND a junior it will be much, much harder to get into either one... plus, you're majoring in science/math, which both schools already have plenty of from the United States.

It is true that EA applicants are stronger and more competitive at Stanford but since Yale already said that they don't really have junior applicants... perhaps you're better off doing Stanford SCEA? I'm not sure about this one. I know that stanford places huge emphasis on essays though. good luck!

Where did you guys hear that Stanford has stronger and more competitive applicants?

Thanks for your reply~
what major should I pick? What are the favourites of US students?
For me ,almost everything is OK except pre-med.
Any advice on that?

hm. I would have to say that Biology is a very popular major. ... Economics and business are others. You should check out the stanford website-- they give a list of the popular majors there.

A word of caution- although Stanford says it "welcomes" HS Jrs, you have to be an absolutely phenomenal applicant to have a hope of acceptance. I've lived next door to Stanford for 30 years [ my husband is an alumni] and the only younger students I have ever heard of being accepted there were true, true geniuses. Remember, since Yale has eliminated SCEA, Stanford is expecting more that 20,000 applications this year. That's a lot of seniors you would need to beat out, so don't get your hopes up too high.

I agree with menloparkmom, while both schools welcome high school Jrs, the number of juniors who are actually admitted are few and far between.

Keep in mind that both Yale and Stanford are both exclusive users of the common app. This year the common app ask if you state the details as to why you are graduating early (there is a real difference between graduating early becasue you can and want to leave early and graduating early because you have exhausted your most rigerous high school curriculm) .

Yale hasn't eliminated SCEA as far as I know.

According to their website Yale is still SCEA

Sorry, my bad, I mixed it up with the other Ivy who dropped early admissions this year.

I know this year's EA will be painful. But I need to get a result by the end of this year. And then decide to continue RD or to concentrate on my national college entrance exam.4 months really works.
One of my friends was accepted as a high school junior.class 2010,from China.

What if I study film?romance literature? But dad and mom will get mad.

you cannot apply to college as a junior

Do you need financial aid?

Klee0891 - why can't you apply as a junior?

Both Stanford and Yale said I can. They also look other aspects like mature and...
the 2 schools are non-binding,if I was accepted, and then if I have a need of money, they'll give me enough.

WHY apply as a junior? (In other words, why not finish high school on the usual schedule?)

Yes, it is possible to apply as a junior, and it is possible at all of the top colleges to start studying at age sixteen, but the more time you have to develop your abilities, the higher your chances of being admitted and the more you will enjoy the college experience.

So, again, why are you planning to apply as a junior? What local conditions prompt you to consider that plan?

I'd also like to know why...

You can apply at virtually any age ... that said to me the more relevant questions are why do you want to apply early and at what age are your odds of aceptance higher. I do not believe the schools will not look at your applying after your junior year as an advantage ... and while I do not think they see it as a disadvantage it looks to me that it puts you at a disadvantage than if you finished HS. Why a disadvantage ... on less year of rigorous classes, one less year of ECs, one less year of maturity, less opportunities for leadership positions, etc ... in another year you could add a bunch of stuff the schools would like. Which brings us back to the question of why do you want to apply early?

Chinese students go to school 1 year later than American. So I am 17 now.1990er.
We don't have any new classes on senior year.Courses are almost finished now.THe last year we just review the old things and do all kinds of tests to prepare for the national college entrance exam.School from 6:50 AM to 10:50PM.I don't think we have time to do ECs and develope social skills.Especially in such competitive school,if I skip school for a month,I will probably get 1000 out of 1500 students.Because everyone is studying in every second.
In China, instead of applying to college,we only take that exam. Each college has there own score line.for example,700.If I get a 700+/750,I will get into that top university, but if I get a 699/750.I won't have the chance there. and Get into a common college or a bad one.We can only choose 1 university!!and there are millions of kids taking that exam on the same day.Luck is really important.
If I decide to study abroad,I don't need to take that exam and to review the things I am already good at and unrelated to my future concentration. So the year doesn't help me at all.I also choose some chemistry courses in University. All my school works are strong enough to apply.(I don't know what my SATs will be like). So I want to apply as a high school junior.a year in college can work a lot.
