Applying as engineering

I heard that if I were to apply as an Electrical Engineer major and I do not get into the Engineering school I can still be accepted to UCLA in general......
I know this is not how it is for Berkeley...I'm just confused

It's a very low chance that this will happen for electrical engineering. It happened to me with bioengineering (got admitted to Chem E instead), but then again, bioengineering is probably the most competitive major to get into here.

cause i was just planning on ee because it seemed like a win win (either i get into engineering or just ucla itself) but i wasn'/t sure if it was like that for all the majors or if it was even true

From what they post on the website, ucla does not routinely consider you for alternate majors.

Q: If I am not admitted under my first choice major, will UCLA review me for my alternate major?

A: Within the College of Letters and Science, the major an applicant chooses is not a factor in the review process at the freshman level. UCLA does not normally consider the alternate choices of applicants who applied to majors in the other schools (Engineering, Arts, etc.).

And on the ucla admissions blog last spring they wrote
[quote]
Applicants to the professional schools at UCLA, including the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, are reviewed by major. And UCLA only reviews applicants for their first choice major. Our policy is that applicants who are not accepted to their major will not receive an offer of admission. There are other paths to admission, such as transferring from a California community college or from another UC. We give those transfer applicants priority.

The blog did point out, though, that some applying into bioengineering were accepted into other engineering programs.
