I'm thinking of applying to the U of Chicago in the fall and it is my ultimate ambition to double major Economics as well as Political Science. I am wondering how admissions differ when applying as either or.

Would it be easier (or possible if they allow such mobility) to apply as a Poli Sci. major in the fall and then assuming I got in, add the second major of Economics? Or is competition for the Econ. department so high as to not allow that sort of change.

Any thoughts or advice on it would be much appreciated :]

You don’t apply to one major, so you can pick anything after being accepted if you so choose. What you do say when you apply is your first-choice major, which will be looked at in the context of the rest of your application but not make too much of a difference. For example, if you have a lot of musical accomplishments, good supplement etc. you may want to say music is your first choice major. If you have helped out with a lot of political campaigns and done student government political science may look good. If you’ve done mostly music or mostly politics though and you say fine arts (without any accomplishments in that field) it may hurt you.

All in all what you put on your app isn’t binding and it probably won’t make or break your app (it shouldn’t, actually). It may, however, help you stand out as an accomplished and motivated applicant so I would advise putting down whichever you have more accomplishments and demonstrated interest in or both when you apply. Who knows? By this fall you may be interested in something completely different anyway.
