Applying before or after Nov 1?

Was wondering if it makes a bigger difference to apply before or after Nov 1 for scholarships? I’m planning on taking the acts and retaking the sats in the fall so I will most likely have to apply after Nov 1. Does this severely affect my chances of getting a scholarship? I’m trying to get the National Buckeye and Trustees scholarship (I’m also applying for the morrill). Thanks in advance!

From OSU’s website:
“Merit scholarships have a November 1 priority deadline
Freshman applicants to the Columbus campus for autumn semester who submit the Common Application and all required materials (test scores, letter of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) by November 1, 2013, will receive priority consideration for merit scholarships”

Personally, I wouldn’t risk applying after Nov 1; while you might (?) receive the scholarship, why risk it. It’s worth a lot of money!

Are the tests available in early Sept - you need to allow 6 weeks from the test date for OSU to receive the scores.

Two of my three OSU students received the National Buckeye and Trustees scholarships and it makes a huge difference. Sadly, my other son will have much more in student loans to repay.

Bottom line: Meet the Nov 1 deadline! Good luck!

The only thing messing me up is the sat. The first one is available in early October and I definitely don’t want to send my scores before I have the chance to look at them. Do they really take six weeks to get there? If I tried to apply before Nov 1 I would have like 2 weeks tops for my sat scores to get there unless I sent them the ones I took in May but I only got a 1620 which is no where near where I want it to be.

Definitely apply before November 1st!

The OSU site says allow six weeks - not sure it takes that long, but it might. It looks like ACT is offered on Sept 13 - have you considered taking that instead of SAT? My kids had similar scores on both tests. Just a thought…

I agree that you should definitely apply before Nov 1 but if your only score is the 1620 you should probably wait if you think you can do much better. It’s better to apply later with a high score then to try to get a scholarship and end up not getting accepted at all. With that said, if you get accepted I’m pretty sure you can send OSU an updated SAT/ACT score to determine whether or not you get scholarships.
Not sure if you’ve taken the ACT at all but Bearvet said its offered in september so I would take that for sure. In my opinion the ACT is easier if you struggle with the vocabulary in the SAT. The english sections aren’t just straight up vocabulary but instead more of using vocab/correct grammar in a short story. Also the math section is pretty straight forward without any tricks and the science is just data analyzing. Goodluck!

Yes I did see that the ACT was offered in September and it would be my first time taking it. I was planning on taking it anyway. I’m just not sure if my SAT score would hurt my chances of actually being accepted. I know that I can raise it because I’m getting an SAT tutor and I got the 1620 with barely any prep. Do you think that if I took the ACT and got like a 28-29 I should just apply with that? I know that based on the conversion charts I can get at least a 25 but I’m not sure if that’s enough to get accepted into OSU

If you get the 28-29 definitely apply with that. I know alot of people that were accepted with 27-29’s on the ACT and being out of state will help you too. As long as your high school GPA/class rank is decent you should be fine.
