Applying early action vs. taking the ACT again?

Currently have a 28 ACT, it was my first time taking it. I am planning on taking the December ACT, but I wanted to apply early action (undecided major) to UIUC (avg. 25-30), Purdue (avg. 25-31), IU (avg. 24-30), and Miami Ohio (avg. 26-31) by November 1st. My GPA is lower than average because of personal challenges junior year (that was my only bad year, soph/freshman were almost all A’s) so I wanted to apply early action for a better chance of getting in. Should I apply early action & just tell them I’m taking December ACT too? Or wait for regular decision deadline? Or just apply early action and not mention taking ACT again?

Thank you!

What is your weighted and unweighted GPA?

Have you taken any practice ACT tests to see if you have improved?

What is your state of residence? What is your anticipated field of study (i.e., which college at each school will you apply to)?

How are your first semester senior grades looking? They could boost your GPA if you can wait until the semester ends to apply.

You can tell them you are taking the December ACT but I’m doubtful they will factor it in to their decision.

Unweighted is 2.9, weighted is 3.5. All honors courses, GPA was just brought down a ton by junior year (explained in my app). Last practice test I took I got a 32 on.

I’m from Illinois, applying undecided but in my essay I talked about deciding between education and applied health sciences (speech pathology, community health, etc.). First semester senior grades are straight A’s, but many of their deadlines are before my semester ends so I’m not sure if the colleges will see these grades.

These schools are going to be a reach with both GPA and ACT. What are your match and safety schools?

Safeties are Iowa and Arizona and I’ve gotten into both already. I’m applying to UIUC, Indiana, Purdue, Miami, Kentucky, Clemson, and Mich State still. Really just want to get into any of those, mostly UIUC.

Congrats on getting into your safeties, that’s great!

I would still apply to Purdue EA because they fill most of their class that way. As soon as you get updated scores, send them along with having your GC send your first semester grades.

We are also Illinois residents - DD is now a freshman in college.

We were told anecdotally that in-state residents with an ACT of 30 will most likely be accepted at UIUC although not necessarily for their major.

Congrats on your safeties. Apply and send in your scores when available. Look also at UIC and for education ISU. I bet most of your teachers went to ISU. They supply Illinois with the most teaching certificates.
. Just saying…
