Applying Early Action

ideagetter–

Sporting Events at JMU are pretty easy to get. The only exception being football, where you must register 2 weeks prior to the game in order to get your ticket. That process is done online, so really, if you do it the day of the ticket release, you’ll have a ticket. We just upgraeded our stadium to seat about 30,000, so our student section will be getting larger so it might be slightly easier to get a ticket as a student.

Football games are huge. It is THE thing to do on campus on the weekend, and we’ve sold out games for the past few years, primarily due to the success that we have at home games and we travel pretty well. JMU beat Virginia Tech this past year in football, and almost knocked off Maryland in 09… so we have a lot of hype when we go to play ACC/Big East teams. We are scheduled North Carolina this year, and next year we play WVU in FedEx field (Home of the Redskins). Basketball our team struggles, but we get featured on ESPN2/ESPNU enough to the point where the students still come out to the games. We have well attended baseball, lacrosse, volleyball, and soccer games. We love sports at JMU whether it’s playing intramural/club sports or attending the varsity games.

Social scene is pretty vibrant at JMU. We typically get labelled as a party school (and to be truthful, there is a lot of it), but really we are just like any other southern school. We do have a huge social atmosphere, everyone is everyone’s friend, and we want to keep it that way. There is plenty to do in the Harrisonburg community, especially when you get involved in one of our evergrowing number of groups and clubs (over 400) from athletic, to interest-based, to community service etc. There is always something to do from the fall, going to a corn maze, fairs, exhibits in town square, music festivals. Winter, we have 3 mountains within a 45 minute drive to go skiing/snowboarding/tubing. When the weather gets warm, we have a few locations off campus where students like to go, like union tower and blue hole that have huge lakes and streams with diving rocks, etc. And between that time we have concerts every couple of weeks, and the movie theatre on campus that shows movies a couple nights of the week. So there is plenty to do at school social-wise.

Students don’t go home on the weekend all too much. Unless its for a certain purpose or emergency situation, we usually like to stick around. I have gone home (Baltimore) twice, for occasions that weren’t holidays, and that was because I went to see JMU play Maryland and Towson at their campuses.

I’ll be happy to answer any more questions y’all might have!

Here’s a story about JMU’s stadium expansion together with aeriel view of that portion of the campus [After $62.5M stadium renovation, James Madison looks to measure up on the field - The Washington Post](http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/after-625m-stadium-renovation-james-madison-looks-to-measure-up-on-the-field/2011/08/18/gIQAjb3yMJ_story.html?fb_ref=NetworkNews&fb_source=profile_oneline)

you can see the interstate in the top left corner of the pic

If a student has zero interest in playing or watching sports, will they feel left out at JMU? We have crossed many schools off because of a seeminfly overwhelming sports obsession on campus which led to a belief that it would be difficult to find friend and people to hang out with who shared an overall lack of interest in sports or anything sports related.

Does anyone know about the physics program at the school?

@joan52:

JMU has a large sports following, and club/IM sports are pretty big too. However, JMU has something for everyone and I’m sure there’s plenty of students who don’t follow sports.

In regards to physics, all I know about the department is my physics teacher in highschool did her undergraduate at JMU, I know she did her graduate at UVA so I assume JMU’s department has enough of a name if she got into UVA grad.

@joan52:
To echo Spike511, JMU does have something for most everyone, including those who don’t follow sports. It’s the football games that draw the big crowds; the other sports have loyal followings, but decidedly smaller. But even if a student is not into football, the games provide an outlet for students (as well as alumni and parents) to show their school spirit and have fun with tailgating and such. Beyond sports, JMU has plenty. I’d emphasize the new Performing Arts Center, which serves as the hub for many clubs and organizations related to the performing arts, both formal and informal. There are plenty of other clubs and organizations…really, something for everyone (to be redundant). As a sidenote, I’ll say that my son became much more interested in the school sports scene since entering JMU, moreso than he was in HS, due to the school spirit aspect of it.

PAmom59: I have a daughter that attends Penn State Main…lovesssssss it…this huge school became much smaller the minute she moved in to the freshmen dorms. She made a close knit friend group in a matter of weeks (which she still hangs out with as a sophomore in her apartment), and has endless opportunities for other friend groups and just basically endless opportunity no matter what the subject regarding Penn State Main. On that note, she absolutely loved JMU when she visited! and would have been very happy to go there too. I guess what I am trying to say is don’t discount your In State school because of size. I have learned that the saying is true "You can make a big school small, but you can’t make a small school big (this not in relation to JMU, but more in relation to the small liberal arts college my son attends!) and… JMU is once again on the top of our list for our next daughter, along with Penn State - University Park of course! Oh, and I cannot forget Univ. of Sout Carolina -Columbia…also on the top of the list for her…but i gotta tell you…with Penn State’s rep combined with in-state price tag…I am encouraging her to take a summer start if that is what she has to do to get in!!! We hear the summer kids loved their experience and got a feel for the campus before the fall rush anyway. P.S. … and if you have never seen a WHITE OUT in the football stadiums during a big home game…there is nothing else like it…the spirit from those student stands even registers on the richter scale lol…no joke.

greatescape- great to haer that your D loves Penn State- actually I’ve yet to hear of many people who go to Penn State who don’t like it–My D is not really a big football fan so I don’t think the white out would hold too much appeal to her–I’m a little worried about her getting lost in the shuffle at a huge school like Penn State in giant lecture halls where no one knows whether you attend, or not. I have heard that you need to have a very assertive and proactive approach to seeking out help from from teachers advisors. At this point Delaware is looking like the first choice; I think JMU would be right up there if it weren’t for the distance away from home and difficulty of traveling back and forth.

pamom59- I understand completely…we have four kids and they are all so different in what they want for their college experience. My daughter only had 1 class in a giant lecture hall with about 200 people. However, all her other classes were relatively small (about 20 to 30 kids), especially in her major classes. Each semester, she has one really big class, and it usually concerns the university requirements every kid must complete. A lot of kids from my daughter’s h.s. (which was in DE, although we are PA residents) attended UD. I have never heard anything bad about it…in fact…there are kids who went to Villanova, Clemson, Pitt, etc. who ended up transferring there, for whatever reason. As I am sure you are aware, it just holds a hefty price tag for us out-of-staters for a public. My daughter’s best friend goes there, her home is about 30 min away, and only comes home for breaks hahah lolz. (PS…you don’t have to be a football fan to love the white out…it is the school spirit in the white out stands which knocks your socks off hahaha.)

Did anyone attend the Open House on 9/24? I did, and I was impressed. It was well-organized and not nearly as chaotic as I expected.

We had signed up to attend but were all sick that weekend. Oh well - we have visited before.

The online admission status thing now shows my son’s application is complete (yay) - so when do we hear a decision - December? January?

I believe that they send out their notifications in mid-January.

Usually by around January 15th-ish for EA.

Dont be dissapointed if anyone here dosen’t make EA, I was deferred EA and accepted RA…so it’s definately not the end of the line.

Rockvillemom I think we were also together in the jewish schools thread. Do you know if there’s a sizable jewish community at JMU. My daughter applied yesterday.

Hi - there is a Hillel and a Jewish fraternity - AEPi. I have seen estimates of about 800 Jewish students at JMU. I have not been able to get much anecdotal info - don’t know any Jewish students at JMU presently.

Have you seen this:

http://jmuhillel.blogspot.com/</a></p>

The national Hillel website estimates the undergraduate Jewish population at JMU to be 1200 actually. Seems high to me - unless many are just not interested in participating in Hillel.

My son was just accepted to Penn State but is interested in JMU as well and does anyone know when EA decisions are coming out for JMU?

JMU sends out EA decisions mid-January… usually around January 15.

My daughter is Jewish and a senior at JMU. She was in a sorority that was all Jewish girls but she ended up not liking it so dropped out. She had gone to Hillel on occasions and found a nice group of friends, some jewish and some are not. It seems like there is an increase in the jewish population.

Last year they were online on January 3rd and letter my daughter got was dated Jan. 4th

My daughter just received the following email from JMU. It does not say when admission decisions will be released…maybe mid-January, maybe earlier??
