Applying for fall of 2010 Cornell

I transferred 4 semesters ago and yeah this is a huge critique the Cornell experience so far. To be fair though, it’s a product of the social awkardness/cliquiness of the mainstream students. As a whole, it’s accurate to characterize the average transfer as far more balanced/social/normal than the regular kids. It’s safe to say that 95% of your friends throughout your Cornell career will be transfers unless you pledge a frat/sorority, which isn’t really a big deal. We’re far more fun.

@ntmike: Ironic did not.

Ntmike, how are you applying for your FAFSA? Are filling one out for your current school and one for Cornell? I have to do it soon.

ntmike: i didn’t, as azonic said, but my bf did and he got a great package. he’s graduating with less than 10k in debt. i know a lot of other people happy with their packages, so hopefully you’ll get something good.

and i completely agree with caillebotte. transfers are more fun than the fratsters :)

hey quick question: for CALS , the supplement offers applicants the choice of a secondary major if they dont get into their first one.

SO would our chances be lowered if we pick a second major? because it shows un-dedication to our current major or something like that?

and also do we get accepted by major or by school? Like would someone applying for biological sciences and another for AEM directly compete?

@azonic: I will fill out the Cornell one only coz I’m a foreign student!
@ironicallyunsure: Thanks! At first I didn’t want to apply for a big package coz i thought it might affect my admission chance. but now i’m aiming for a 15-20k package. I heard PTK also offers an additional package of 8k/year

No, your chances are not affected by indicating a second choice major. There is a lot of overlap between majors and even colleges at Cornell, particularily in the life sciences. This is why they give the option in the first place.

thankyou caillebotte. would we have to write a 2nd essay if we do choose a second choice major?

Nope, it would be inadvisable to write a second essay.

When you choose an “alternative” major for CALS, there is no additional essay required. It is just a check and a drop down box. It doesn’t hurt to check one; it’ll show that you’re willing to work with them…

thanks to both of you

In my CA essay, do you guys think it’s wrong to make my school sound like a good school but Cornell is even better?

I don’t want them to think I’m unsure about transferring but on the other hand I don’t want to be school-bashing because that looks bad too.

Whats the rule on the number of LOR we can send to cornell? Is it advisable if i send 2 letters from professors and one from my work study department? Anyone who has successfully transferred can relate their experience on this matter? thanks a lot

-double post-

Nooooo! It says you have to have taken 3 years of one foreign language in High School, but I took one semester of Latin and two of French :frowning: :frowning: Am I screwed?

EDIT:batman: do exactly that. Praise your current school, but explain why Cornell is a better fit.

Luckily I’m foreign student. My first language is Vietnamese and I was bilingual French-Vietnamese for 12 years.

i sent 2 LORs, both from my former major (psych) profs and i did research with one. both were also alumnae so that’s cool lol. i’m sure that didn’t hurt.

for the CA essay, i’d focus on all the positives that cornell has to offer. explain why you don’t like your school very briefly, then talk about what you want from cornell and what you’d be giving back to the community there.

The application status is ready for checking! Anyone has the midterm report ticked as “Received” ?

I checked , but my college transcript which sent 2 weeks ago didnt show there, actually most of them still not received

Should I ask my teachers whats happening with my recommendations? I gave it to them a month ago and told them the deadline was March 15 (regretting this).

@2010moveon: My college transcript isn’t showing up either. I will probably send another one in just in case.

@Hirose: Nope, mine isn’t. My midterms are this week.

Just want to know is there anyone’s college transcript did not show up, and when did you send it? It seems that Cornell take a long time to process the materials(I did on JAN 25)
