Applying for housing at San Francisco State?

Ok, I got accepted into San Francisco State University, but like there are some colleges on my list that I applied to that I would much rather go to if I got accepted. But at the same time, I could get rejected or I could change my mind, basically everything is still up in the air. Someone said I should apply for housing even if I don't know if I am going there or not. Should I? It cost 50$ nonrefundable, which is like another application. If I should apply to housing here, should I apply to housing to every college I get accepted to? Thats a lot of money. HELP I dont know what to do! THe person said that I have to apply now because there is limited space, the website also said it is first come first serve. I guess I should apply??????

Housing is very expensive in SF; although, rents are down slightly and vacanices are up. I would apply for housing. SF State is a commuter school, and I would want to live with some fellow students. There is also a huge apartment complex next to the school. There are vacancies. I can't remember the name. Park Merced? Hopefully, somebody out there knows. Then you can compare housing costs. That might not be a bad alternative.

If I DO decide to go to SFS, how would I get an apartment with students? I'm applying out of state from New Jersey and I don't know a single soul in San Francisco.

Use Craigslist. Check out Villas Park Merced on google(or maybe it has its own web site). That's the name of the huge apartment complex. www.craigslist.org Click on SF bay area. Click on apts. Call SF State and see if they have a bulletin board for renters. You will get a place.
If money is absolutely no object to you, I would go to Univ.of Washington over SF State in a heartbeat. Sf State is filled with too many commuters, and students that have to work to survive.
San Francisco is a great city, however. I used to work a couple of blocks from SF State.

Man this is soooooo stressful. Its only december, I've only gotten one response so far, and I'm already looking into rooming up with someone?!?!?! Do I have to do all this now? Should I wait til I decide whether or not I go there before I go apartment hunting? Would it be better to submit an application for housing now just in case and then look at the apartments later?

And yes I would also go to university of washington in a heartbeat. I applied there and it IS my first and top choice, but my chances are not that great. And I love city settings like NYC so I love how its busy. I could not stand living in a small town again.

What is your gpa and test scores? Are you high enough for Boston University? Have you ever thought of going to school in a college town? My daughter goes to Ann Arbor and it is a great place to go to school. The town is dominated by college students. Tons of energy at the school. Madison, Wisconsin, and Boulder Colorado are great college towns and Colorado is not hard to get into.

I have my list and applied to 6 out of the 8 so far. I applied to ALL on the west coast, so Boston is too close for me. I want out of here as far as I can.

I applied to
University of Washington
Oregon State
California State Fresno
Portland State
University of Montana
San Francisco State

and I need to apply to
Washington State
Colorado State

I know like 1 or 2 isn't exactly city life but I like the schools. I am still so undecided on where I am going if its going to be based on the academics of the school or the location, because both are so important with probably location being just a bit more important. San Fran is so beautiful I hear but I dont want to commit to SFSU just because its the first school I got accepted into and I don't want that to sway me away from the other schools. UGH so stressful.

So do I apply for housing or wait til I decide to look into apartments?????

If you want to live in a dorm situation, you have to pay the deposit. Apply to Colorado and Oregon if you have anything close to a 3.0 gpa and 1100+ SAT score. I don't see too many city schools on your list.

Yes I already applied to OSU and I will be applying to CSU by the end of the month.

And I do want to live in a dorm situation (now that I think about it, apartment living sounds great at as well! I dunno now...). I guess i'll place the deposit.

My GPA is 3.4 , class rank of 45/364 and my SAT is 1130 (500M/630V).
Also, yeah I know most of them arent "city" but the campuses look like a busy place and I want to do the dorming thing too as well as live in a nice place where its not dead.

Why are you choosing OSU and CSU over the Univ. Colorado and the Univ of Oregon?
Have you also considered Arizona and Arizona State? You have a chance at Washington.
My cousin went to SF State, then transferred to Arizona. Loved Arizona. My sister-in-law went to Colorado. Loved Colorado. Washington is a good choice.

My major is Zoology/Wildlife Biology. There are NOT that many schools that have that.

Believe me, I have been researching my colleges for YEARS and the 8 I have are the ones for me.

OK Good luck.

Did you look at Humboldt state in Calif? Their zoology department is rated better than SFSU. Just a thought. The University of Wyoming also has a highly rated zoology/wildlife management program.

Have you ever been to the west coast? Sure hope you can get out here before you have to make the decision. Best of luck.

Actually yeah I did look into Humboldt, and I even had it on my list but I guess during the shuffle of looking at new schools I took it off, it didn't look like a fit for me. And I already had colleges not as far as I wanted so I couldn't add something like University of Wyoming.

And I do plan to get out to my colleges that accepted me and I would consider probably during spring break if I get enough money together.

Platinumtlc, do send in the housing application fee---I was the one who told you to do this in your other thread. As a parent, if my kid was going to school in a huge cosmospolitan city 3000 miles away, where he didn't know anyone, I would want him in a dorm, at least at first. If you hate the dorm, it's easy to get out of your housing contract. There are plenty of kids on the housing waiting list. You might make some friends who need another roommate.

Craigslist is great. When my older son was at SFSU he found two places to live using craigslist.

I understand your wanting to go west; my son did not apply to any CA schools and applied ED to Boston University.

Yea I just payed for the housing contract yesterday.
And yes I do want out of NJ so bad! Atleast I know I will be going somewhere on the west coast.

Good luck to you platinumtlc - and welcome to the west coast. As a former New Yorker, I love it here ---

I love that "welcome to the west coast" -- 6 more months I cant wait I want out of this place so bad and I dont want to look back.
