It is one of the 8 schools on my list, and its the first response I got.
I got admitted and I was really happy, even if it wasn't one of my top choices, I was happy I got accepted into something!
I am applying from NJ to
University of Washington
Colorado State
Oregon State
University of Montana
Portland State
Washington State
California State Fresno

So yeah, SFSU is one of my "last resort" sort of schools, but its not like definately out of the picture. My top choice is University of Washington, but my chances there are definately not that great. After that it's Oregon State and then Colorado State. If I get rejected from all three of those schools, then I have to completely rethink where I want to go. So in the hopefully unlikely case I won't get accepted into those 3 schools and like Portland and Washington State, how is San Francisco State?

The thing that stands out the most to me, even more so than Oregon State and Colorado STate is the fact that it's right in the middle of a big city. I love the city, being from NJ I go to NYC every chance I get. I love the atmosphere of like a busy place with lots of people to meet and lots of things to do. I told my counselor when I found out I got accepted that I probably won't go there, but I have been thinking it over and SFSU is definately gaining some points. Location is a big thing, and I love the fact SF is soooooooooo far from where I live now and that SF is a nice city.

But how is SFSU? How are the academics? What about the dorms? What about the people there? I plan to major in Zoology/Biology and also a big plus is there is a nice zoo there I could work at after I graduate or while I go to college, as say opposed to Oregon and Colorado. There are so many factors I'm scared I'm going to make the wrong decision (lol look at me stressing over where I'm going when I've only gotten one response so far and I still need to send out 5 applications!).

But anyway, tell me about San Francisco State!

SFSU has some really well regarded departments. I'm not sure of all of them but Creative Writing, film, art, business, nursing, teaching cert.

I went to State a long time ago. Very big, mostly off campus living, dorms right there on campus close, tons of people going part-time while working. It is in the nether reaches of SF toward Daly City, but has a metro line that zips downtown right there. A shopping mall next door on one side and a huge apartment complex other side.

SF is a fun town to live in, great transportation so easy to get around, lots to do, tons of cheap and free.

Academics are going to vary by how big the class is and how good the teacher is. Sometimes you are going to have a problem getting in a class you want/need. Advising was non existent, don't know anymore.

I'm not sure they allow links here, but I posted the question on craigslist for you. craigslist has many ppl from SF Bay Area so they have some ideas. Most posters are post-undergrads tho, and many jerkoffs post but you have to ignore them. Scroll down to look for question about SFSU departments.

If you have any questions about SF, you can email me...I'm taking that you can't visit, but if you want to let me know--we have a guest room and I'd speak with your parents.

If you're thinking of attending SFSU and plan to live on campus, get your housing application in NOW. There are only two dorms. Off-campus living is expensive but kids share houses and apartments. Outer Sunset is pretty, relatiely safe and accessible by public transportion. Wow, you're going to pay out of state tuition??

SFSU is a state school. You may get closed out of certain classes because your registration time is late, or may have to take evening classes.

What if I'm not sure if I'm going to go there, like I said its my first response and there are like 4 other schools on my list that are above SFSU in terms of where I want to go, but still I want to go over everything when I get responses from all the colleges. Can I apply for housing and then cancel later if I decide not to go??

So wait, does it apply to every school that I get accepted to? I have to apply for housing even if I don't know if I'm going to go there? Thats a lot of money. I'm already applying to 8 schools, which in total cost like over $400. $50 housing fee is a lot.

San Francisco State is at one of the corners of San Francisco, not downtown at all. Yes, it is near the zoo. Time to downtown by public transit is about an hour unless you get an express. They are expanding the dormitories, but it still is primarily a commuter school. The campus is all right. Some programs are good but you need to check specific ones because, like other CSU schools, they are under pressure to reduce the budget and have threatened to scrap some programs.
If you are Jewish, you should be aware that there has been a very hostile atmosphere to Israel and to Jews on campus. The school is trying to damp that atmosphere but it often breaks out.

I might visit it over spring break, if I get enough money I want to try go to on like a college-visit extravaganza and visit like all the colleges I got into (or just sfsu if I get rejected from everything else!).

Is the area where SFSU is sort of like a city setting?

SFSU is in a nice area close to Lake Merced. Stonestown Galleria is about five minutes' walk north of the campus and has Macy's, Nordstrom's, Borders, and your general mall stores.

You never mentioned what area of study you're interested in. That should be a factor in your decision.

SF is very expensive. Take a look at craisglist housing in city of San Francisco--- areas like Outer Sunset, SFSU, etc. You can easily pay $700 for a room in a house sharing with 3-4 others. Then there's utilities, internet access, food, etc.

I can't speak about the housing situations at the other colleges to which you're applying. But as Dadofsam says, SFSU is basically a commuter school. It might be worth the $50 to reserve a spot. If you visit in spring and fall in love with the place, your parents might feel better with you living in a dorm if you're 3000 miles away.

Is 700 a good price? I have no idea what is good or a bad price. I didn't think I would have to worry about where I would live til I decided where I was going to go. I will live wherever I can get and it is nice.
