any suggestions for good freshman dorms?

also how long is the housing application?

I’ve heard you can’t pick your dorm.

The housing application isn’t very long at all. It took my future roommate and me about… oh, five minutes? Something like that.

And while you aren’t necessarily a shoe-in concerning your dorm, you do get to list your top three choices on the Housing Application. UNC will try its best to put you in the dorm you request.

As for “good freshman dorms,” what are you looking for? A small dorm, a social/crazy dorm, suite or hall style? It makes a difference.

I am asking the same thing. I want a dorm that is comfortable, new, and pleasing to look at, but at the same time near all the freshmen parties on South campus… I know that isn’t feasible, but what is the closest to this?

same here. I want a good party dorm on South campus but not one with tiny, dirty rooms lol. Any suggestions?

Well, you guys might be interested in Morrison. It was built in the sixties, but it was renovated in 2006, and it’s supposed to be really nice now. It’s a suite-style on South Campus (where most of the freshman are going to be staying) with Central A/C. Hmm, what else… it’s one of the biggest dorms on campus and has 10 stories, so you’re in a large community. The closets are basically just two wardrobes, too. Depending on how lucky you are (since UNC’s housing selection is done by lottery system), it might be difficult to get into Morrison, so if you really want to stay there, I’d suggest applying for the LLC (Sustainability).

As for a “party dorm,” Hinton James (HoJo) is typically considered the craziest, fun freshman dorm. People do complain about the rooms, though, but it’s not as bad now that there’s A/C. Despite the fact that it’s one of the older dorms, most people I know who have stayed there love it because the social scene makes up for any room issues. And anyway, it’s a bonding experience. HoJo also has built-in wall closets spanning the length of one wall with no doors over them. It’s convenient for storage. The rooms look like this, with part of the wall unit looking like this (w/o curtains) here.

theman44, you might be looking for a smaller dorm, though. Hardin, Horton, and Koury (all built in 2002), are all on South Campus and might be more up your alley.

For more information, see here. Clicking on the dorm’s name (not the community page) takes you to its page.

I hope that helped. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. :)

Thanks for the helpful info. I think I am leaning towards Morrison or Carmichael. I am just confused on what to do next. All I have done is pay the $250. I am guessing that after Housing, I should start with CTOPS??

Yeah, you need to sign up for CTOPS. That doesn’t take very long, either, though there’s another fee. And no problem! :)

Morrison can be a little harder for freshman to get into - it’s not a slam dunk, as some older students stay there. It also has a Living Learning Center - which is one way to try to get in there, research those on the UNC website.
1.) You need to try to find a roommate, you can do this on FB with class of 2015, or a friend …or not, and go pot luck.
2.) fill out the housing form, you will need your roomate’s PID number if you have one
3.) register for CTOPS
4.) There will be other things to do as well, you can find all of this on your connect carolina account - using your oneyn (health form, etc.)
5.) Ctops will give you most of the rest of the info - like books, meal plans, etc.
There are ctops threads on here as well - what to take, what to expect, etc.

Worth a thought - I’m a senior here. I wanted to live somewhere really nice but also wanted to be near first years. Then I went and peeked in at Kenan community and it was SO nice I just figured I’d just walk down to south campus.

Turned out, all of my friends on south campus liked hanging out in my room so much that they usually came up to my room on Friday nights to party or pre-game or hang out or whatever. It turned out my room was the social hub!

Also worth noting - each residence hall has at least 15% first years and they’ll put you all together so you can bond. My hall was filled with first-years and my best friends to this day are from Kenan.

The truth of the matter is that most juniors and seniors don’t live on campus, so most dorms period have first years and sophomores. No matter where you’ll live you will get the freshman experience, I promise, and if you decide you dont like where you’re living people are ALWAYS trying to get off of south campus so you can move south if need be. That won’t happen. Though if you live on South you could also love it.

Just to make sure, can you basically edit your housing assignment up until May 18th (or whenever the deadline is, not positive of the exact date)? I’m kind of anxious to do more things to get ready but I don’t have my roommate set yet. It has the options to change your building preference and roommate preference after you’ve completed your application. So do they not do anything with it until the deadline? I’ve already registered for CTOPS and all that stuff so I need to find something else to do to get ready for UNC and get me through the last two months. :)

I’m not positive - but I think once you push submit your are done, on both building choices and roommates.
Just wait to apply until the deadline - there is no advantage to apply early.

It doesn’t save any of your application unless you submit - I’ve gone through it a few times when I was bored and didn’t submit. So there has to be a reason for the change building and roommate preferences, but you’re probably right about waiting. I’ll most likely have a confirmed roommate within the next week or two but I’m just so anxious and excited to sit and do nothing!

My son found his roommate through the FB page for the class of 2014 …

I already found somebody who will most likely be my roommate, but we’re just trying to figure out when to meet up this week before we make a decision.

Well chilax then! You are almost there!

If you just have them assign you a roommate randomly, is it actually random? Or do they use anything to match you with someone similar, because there wasn’t anything on the housing app about living preferences.
