so what's the deal with the whole housing application process for incoming freshman (fall '08)?
is it important to apply asap, or is there relatively little competition for the various freshman dorms?
thanks in advance

I hear that the dorms are very crowded and most people don't get their first choice. You have to apply for housing by May 3rd, and there is a lottery system to get the dorm you want, so there is no preference to those who apply early.

It says at the bottom of the housing page that it's a lottery.

Statistically don't most people have to get their first choice? seems that way to me...not sure though

Some people don't get any of their five choices actually. Don't expect to get your first choice, otherwise you might be disappointed with your housing offer. I got my third choice, which isn't uncommon.

@kchen: What was your third choice?

It's a crap shoot what you get. Regents seem to get a better choice, but don't know if that's purely anecdotal or not. If you look to last year's housing thread, you'll see a whole lot a complainin' going on! Meaning, third choice if you're lucky. There was a lot of moaning over getting a triple when it wasn't even one of the 4 choices (5th has to be "anything you'll give me").

Oops, I should've answered this ages ago.
@Castel: Unit 1 Triple.
