Applying for Transfer to Stony Brook Fall 2014

I am currently a freshman in college and I want to transfer to Stony in fall 2014. I am expecting a 3.3-3.5 gpa in college and after this first semester I will have completed 15 credits. By fall 2014, I will have 28-30 credits. In high school I had a 3.0 gpa and a 1800 sat score. My grades are mediocre but I am really interested in the health science major at Stony Brook. I was wondering what my chances of getting in are and whether choosing my major on the application affects my chances of getting in. I know that the health science major is very competitive but I am extremely interested. Should I choose undeclared or health science as my major on the application.

Hi peter,

I am also in your position. I have a 3.4 GPA currently and just submitted my transfer application. I don’t know if I can get in with my grades too because I received a C on one of my courses. My other courses I did better, 3 As and 1B. I finished high school with a 89.6 average and my SAT score was not high, 1700 exact. I am also wondering if I can get into stony brook because I really want to do health science. If anyone has any input, those would gladly be appreciated!

hey guys
so im in the same situation as both of you! Well my high school average was only 81 and my SAT score was only 1040(CR+M) or so :(. I did finish my first term of college with a 3.4 GPA with 2 A’s and 2 B’s in a pretty low tier CUNY. I’m planning to apply as a computer science because my current school only offers a spinoff major (Computer information systems). Feel free to share all experiences with transferring!

Here’s the deal for transfers. If you’ve completed less than 24 credits by March 1, then we’re going to look back at your high school coursework and SAT/ACT scores.

If all of that (your first semester AND your HS/SAT/ACT) is strong, then your chances are probably good, although we admit very few students who are in that situation. If your first semester was strong but your SATs are weak, then your best bet is probably to hold off on sending us documentation until you have your spring grades and you’ve crossed that 24 credit threshold. Your chances at transfer admission improve if you’re in that 24-60 credit range with a solid GPA and strong courses.

I’m also applying as a transfer this fall. I also am wondering if anyone has any input on my chances.
I’ve sent in my transcript with a 2.9 GPA and I know that the minimum is 3.0, and i was wondering if there is a slim chance of getting in. I had a 92 average in high school and my SAT scores were 1740. Thank You.
