Freaking Out About Transferring, To Stony Brook Please Help

Hey guys. I'm applying to Stony Brook as a transfer student, and I really don't know if I'm getting in. I'm dying to get accepted since I absolutely love the school. I applied in January, so my application is not late.

I am currently completing my 1st year of college at Kingsborough Community College. I have 15 credits with a 3.01 GPA. I had a 1760 on my SAT's and a 76 High School Average. My high school average is what makes me nervous. I sent in 2 letters or recommendation as well. What are my chances?

hey. i applied as a transfer student to stony brook and found out that i was accepted yesterday.
i'm sure you'll be fine in getting in, i sent in my app in January also, so you should find out soon!
good luck!

Thanks for the response, what were your grades if you don't mind me asking?

i currently have a 3.2..
Before I applied, I looked at the requirements for stony brook, and it said that you needed a 3.0 at least.
I'm transferring from another SUNY, usually those transfers are easier, but CCs are also SUNYs

bump, anyone else?

no one at all?

I don't know anything about Stony Brook, but if tobys is correct about the GPA requirement, and if College Board has accurate numbers (~44%), then I'm sorry to tell you that your chances don't look great.

Because you have only 15 hours of college credit, your SAT and HS GPA will be scrutinized closely, and according to CB, over 50% of incoming freshman had a 3.5 or above. Your SAT score, I'm assuming, will put you within the mid 50% range.

I hope you get in, but if not, you can always do another year at CC, get strong grades, and try again. Also, if your grades this semester are significantly higher, you could consider sending a mid-term report, if its not too late.

Best of luck :)

Well thats depressing

Who knows, though? I could be entirely wrong, and hopefully I am. :)

Is there still time to send in a mid-year report?

Well Kingsborough is weird, its in 4 semesters. A full Fall semester, short winter, Full Spring and then short summer. (The winter and summer are optional.) So because of that my spring semester just started, so no really mid-term reports right now

Does anyone know when I should be hearing back? I swear I'm getting an ulcer from this...

If I were you, I'd stay at your community college for another year in order to bring up your grades to at least a 3.5 with a goal of 3.7. I'm not sure what you are planning to do post-graduation, however, I think you would be better off leaving your community college with a higher overall gpa on your transcript.

In addition, you didn't mention any EC's - if you don't have an excellent resume full of unique extracurricular activities, I'd focus on that during this application year as well. Furthermore, I'd retake the SAT or even try the ACT, and then apply for transfer. If you apply as a junior transfer, your HS record will be less of importance and you'll have a better shot of getting into more prestigious universities.

As a former Stony Brook student, I'm biased, lol, but if I were you, I'd wait and see what else is out there...<hint, hint=""></hint,>

Regardless, good luck. :)
