Applying from College

Hello all, I've been reading posts here for a little while and had a question about applying from college. I've already been talking with a BGO but would like to hear/read some other opinions =O.

I was mainly wondering, what kind of grades, SAT scores, and extracurriculars did you have to receive an appointment from college?

My GPA is a bit low at the moment at 3.3, but by the time I'm ready to apply it should be in the 3.7-3.85 range. My BGO has told me that I need to "ACE" the SAT and completely "WOW" them. But "ACE" and "WOW" could mean anything like 2100/2400 or 2400/2400 so I was a bit curious as to what others had on their applications.

He also suggested that I apply every year even though I am pretty sure I would not be found academically qualified for atleast another year or two. If things go according to plan I would like to attend the USNA in Summer of 2010, so would start my application process in late 2008/early 2009. I could attend Summer of 2009 also but that would be a stretch in my mind.

I have no problem with the nominations as I have the Presidential nom. due to my dad's service. Sports wise I won't have an issue either, though my BGO didn't mention what looked good on my application when it came to leadership qualities. Just that I needed to do well with my English, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics courses.

I'm slightly curious if he just forgot to mention it in the emails/phone conversations or if it isn't that big of a thing for college applicants?

Any information regarding this process is welcome, and thanks in advance. =]

Do make sure that you apply for other noms as well, since only 100 are appointed each year from Pres. noms. Sounds like you are determined and ready to do all you can. Work hard and stay motivated! :)

Will do =P

As for the nominations, yeah I read that also, I'm just going to have to hope that I get the Presidential nomination since I live in California, and the Senators here are eh from what I understand, plus being such a large state.

Will definitely apply to every place that I can though.

Oh on that note, anyone know how the 100 nominations are selected? I'm kind of thinking that once they figure out who they want, and then look at the nominations they go down the list and then whoever doesn't have a nomination from elsewhere, compete for those 100?

As I've read of people on here and other forums/boards that they have 3-4 nominations, but they would only need one in the end I believe? Thus bumping them off the list for those other nominations to go to #2, 3, 4, etc.?

Our son had a presidential, but also 1 each from 2 senators and a representative. He was appointed from the Presidential (we only know because of the dates involved) so I don't believe that it would be quite the way you theorized above, but we are from Alaska. However, as has been noted many times on this site, the process is quite the mystery. Try as we might, there are always exceptions and variations to each seeming "rule." The best course seems to be to do your best, apply for every nom for which you qualify, and then cross your fingers, wait, and if you are so inclined, pray! :) Good luck!

I've been doing a lot of praying lately and I see a lot more praying in my future lol =o. Thanks for the information btw, guess I will just have to hope I'm qualified enough to beat out all the other Californians!

No new information for me ey? =[

i got some info for u cjohnson.... i applied to usna during my senor year in highschool. my gpa was 2.5 and my sat scores were low, and of course i was not accepted.. i also had a nomination....

so i wen to college and applied again, this time i got into naps... i had a 2.0 gpa first semester in college with like a 1600 sat score...and a nomination. ...

what really helped me get in naps at least is my bgo and my congressman, ..... my congressman actually called the admission board on my behalf, and my bgo wrote a verry good report..... so basically, i have had horrible grades and low sat scores, what you need to do is really try to make your congressman call for you and talk to the admission board, dont ask him to do it, but lead him on... i hope u get what im saying.... thats my story, good luck..

Hm very interesting.

I'll have to ask my BGO some more about NAPS, hadn't really thought about it as an option until now.

This gives me a bit of hope if my grades aren't as great as they could be =o.

Thanks for the info!
