Applying Late Disadvantage?

I just learned that Michigan has a modified version of rolling.

Does that mean applying late close to the deadline will affect my chances of getting in?

Short answer: Yes.

Michigan has historically given preference to those students who have applied earlier on in the cycle. It’s not really known whether this is due to their implementation of rolling admissions, or because admissions considers applying early as a way of showing demonstrated interest. Regardless though, it’s pretty much indisputable at this point that those who get their application in early do receive a small advantage (which is really just another way to say that those who procrastinate receive a small disadvantage).

All that said, it’s important to understand that this “advantage/disadvantage” thing is quite minor. If you have the stats, you will have no problem getting in even if you sent your application in on the deadline. Similarly, you shouldn’t expect to get accepted with a mediocre application just because you applied in August. The effect is small.
