Would it be a significant lift if I apply in late September?

It won't help if you're a truly outstanding applicant (they are generally admitted no matter when they apply, as long as it's before the deadline) or if you're a weak applicant (they won't get in no matter how early they apply). Bot fomr some subset of students who fall right along the admit/not admit line, applying earlier can be a help.

i thought they were doing away with rolling though?

It would probably increase your chances for a scholarship though, even if you are an outstanding student.

Wait?!?! So are they doing rolling or not next year?????

Michigan is most likely doing away with rolling admissions next year. It just is not a very organized nor effective way for Michigan to admit people, especially with app totals expected to increase till at least 2012 and if not longer.

However, they will implement either an EA or ED. But unless the EA is SCEA, then I dont know how/why doing EA will really "help" you application like doing E.D. or turning in one's app really early for rolling would.

Wouldn't the University of Michigan have formally announced by now if they were getting rid of rolling admissions? I mean, September is not that far away.

I was a boderline OOS student whose application was completed in December. I got accepted outright in March. I think I got lucky...but then again Michigan isn't as hard to get into as people claim it is.

Despite this, I think applying early has multiple benefits, including increased chance of admissions. Many borderline applicants from my school got accepted...they applied in August and September. Additionally, the acceptance relieved them of so much stress. Furthermore, if you are in contention for scholarships you have to apply early.

they announced that they were getting rid of rolling decision

Here's a good source, in case any of you remain unconvinced:

With our increased selectivity and requirement to adhere closely to enrollment targets, we anticipate that we will transition from modified rolling admission to some early admissions program, i.e. early action or early decision, for the entering freshman class of 2008. We will do our utmost to keep you and your students informed of the changes as we develop our program, and I’d welcome your thoughts over the next few months as we continue to conduct research and analysis on early action and early decision models.

Hi-

An admissions counselor for UM came to our school this past week and he said that as of now next year will still be a rolling admission process-- well atleast as of now.
