Applying to biomedical engineering/ Fall 2012

My son is applying for freshman/Fall 2012. Will be applying Biomedical Engineering. From what I have read, I bet this is one of the more difficult majors to gain admission? Anyone have any information about admission as a freshman to this new major?

What are his stats?

He has 92 overall average, all honors, 7 AP’s, 30 ACT, 1260 SATS. OOS. I am wondering why the BME program at UDEL is not ABET accredited. Possibly too new, I believe the major began at UDEL 2010 .

UD will seek ABET accredidation after the first BME graduating class, Spring 2014.

As far as admission, I’m certainly no expert, but I can give you my son’s high school stats. He is currently a freshman Chemical Engineering major (also very competitive). His weighted gpa was 95.4, unweighted 93.2, 1310 SAT, 3 AP’s and several honors. We are from PA.

Is the 92 gpa weighted or unweighted? UD does weigh course rigor more heavily than a lot of similar state universities, so the 7 AP’s are definitely a plus. They also want to see at least 5 “core” classes both semesters senior year, and a great essay would help as well.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

I am not sure, but from what I have read it is important to attend an engineering program that is ABET accredited. Maybe not?

Yes, from all of my research on the subject last year, it is important that the program be ABET accredited. I guess the next question would be, is there any reason UD would be denied accrediation once they apply? If not, then by time your son graduates, the program should be accredited??

I guess I would find out more about the accredidation process.

Traye…that’s what I was thinking. I probably would encourage him, if that is really gonna be his major, to go to the college that has the ABET in place, already. We are also considering UCONN, UMD, BING. Can I ask you, where else did you consider for engineering? We are NY residents.

ddotjon- Penn State, Virginia Tech and Pitt. He was admitted to all, and chose Delaware because he decided on Chemical, and they have the best Chemical program of the four. He also liked the size and feel of the campus better than Penn State. Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering has a very good Bioengineering program, which is ABET accredited.

ddotjon, you can check this but I think once a school gets their ABET accreditation then it is retroactive to previous classes. They can’t get it until they actually graduate a group. So then UDEL graduates would have graduated from a ABET program.

Thank you all for your answers. We are visiting Friday, can’t wait! Hope it sparks some interest to him!

ddotjon, post back what your impressions of the engineering school are. Univ of Del is on my son’s list but I don’t know when we will get there.
